Skincare Layering Order Calculator

Get the correct application order and wait times for your multi-step skincare routine.

About this calculator

This calculator assembles a skincare routine from the products you toggle on, enforcing a fixed thin-to-thick order and time-of-day rules. Each product carries a preset sequence number and a per-step wait time in minutes — cleanser first with 0.5 minutes wait, toner second, essence third, serum fourth, retinol fifth, moisturizer sixth, face oil seventh, sunscreen last (lines 8-17). Time of Day gates two products: retinol is included only in the evening routine and sunscreen only in the morning, even if you toggle them on — morning forces retinol off and evening forces sunscreen off (lines 13, 16). Active products are filtered to those marked Yes, sorted by their preset order, and counted for Total Steps (lines 19-20).

Wait Time Between Steps sums each active product's wait value (line 23); Total Routine Time adds half a minute of application time per active step on top (lines 24-25). Application Order lists the surviving products as a numbered arrow chain (lines 28, 37). The calculator does not check ingredient conflicts, pH interactions, or prescription timing — it only orders and times the categories you selected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my retinol show up when I select a morning routine?

Retinol is hard-gated to evening routines — when Time of Day is morning, the retinol entry is forced off regardless of your Yes/No toggle (line 13). Sunscreen works the opposite way: it appears only in morning routines and is suppressed in the evening (line 16).

How is Total Routine Time calculated?

It sums two parts: Wait Time Between Steps, which adds each active product's preset wait in minutes (line 23), plus application time at 0.5 minutes per active step (lines 24-25). A five-step routine therefore carries at least 2.5 minutes of application time on top of whatever wait times those five products require.

Can I change the order by toggling products differently?

You can only include or exclude products — the sequence is fixed by each product's preset order number, and active products are always sorted by that number before the order string is built (lines 19, 28). Turning off toner does not let serum move ahead of essence; it simply removes toner from the chain.

What does Wait Time Between Steps represent?

Each product type carries a built-in pause after application — 0.5 minutes for cleanser and toner, 1 for essence and moisturizer, 1.5 for serum, 2 for retinol and sunscreen (lines 8-17). Wait Time Between Steps is the sum of those pauses across every product currently active in your routine (line 23), not a single uniform delay.
