Retinol Concentration Calculator

Calculate your recommended retinol percentage and frequency based on skin tolerance and goals.

About this calculator

Recommended Current % and Application Frequency are calculated from two entirely separate pathways that never interact. Recommended Current % comes from a fixed six-rung concentration ladder (0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%) -- Skin Tolerance sets which rung you start on and how many weeks must pass between each step up (8 weeks for sensitive, 6 for normal, 4 for resilient, lines 14-17), and Weeks Using Retinol divided by that per-step interval, rounded down, determines how many rungs you've climbed (lines 20-24). Application Frequency, by contrast, is read from Current Retinol % directly through its own separate bracket (2 nights/week at 0.025% or below, up to 7 nights/week above 0.1%, lines 28-31), and then reduced by 2 more nights, floored at 2, if Skin Tolerance is sensitive (line 33) -- what you actually type as your Current Retinol % never affects Recommended Current % or Weeks to Goal at all; those two pathways are entirely independent.

Weeks to Goal counts whole ladder rungs remaining, not literal percentage distance: it finds the first rung at or above Goal Retinol % (line 36), so a goal that falls between two rungs still targets the rung above it, and multiplies the number of rungs still needed by the same per-step interval used for Recommended Current % (line 38). Buffer Product Recommended triggers on either condition alone, not both together -- Dry skin type or Sensitive tolerance is enough on its own to recommend a buffer product (line 41).

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your current retinol percentage and select your skin tolerance level.
  2. Input the number of weeks you have already been using retinol.
  3. Set your goal retinol concentration and select your skin type.
  4. Review the Recommended Current % and Application Frequency in nights per week.
  5. Check Weeks to Goal to create a gradual progression plan toward your target concentration.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I enter a higher Current Retinol %, does that change my Recommended Current % or Weeks to Goal?

No. Current Retinol % only drives Application Frequency, through its own separate lookup bracket (lines 28-31); it's never read by the Recommended Current % or Weeks to Goal calculations, which are built entirely from Weeks Using Retinol, Skin Tolerance, and Goal Retinol % instead (lines 14-24, 36-38). Changing Current Retinol % moves only how many nights per week the calculator suggests.

Why does my Weeks to Goal number seem to target a different percentage than what I typed as my Goal?

Weeks to Goal works in whole steps on a fixed six-rung ladder (0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%), not in exact percentage distance. It finds the first rung at or above your Goal Retinol % (line 36) and counts the rungs remaining to reach it, so a goal typed between two rungs still targets the rung above it, not the exact number you entered.

Does Skin Tolerance affect Application Frequency, or only the Recommended Current % ladder?

Both, through two separate mechanisms. Skin Tolerance sets the starting rung and pace of the Recommended Current % ladder (lines 14, 17), and it also directly reduces Application Frequency by 2 nights per week, floored at a minimum of 2, whenever it's set to Sensitive (line 33) -- on top of whatever Current Retinol % already set as the base frequency.

Do I need both Dry skin AND Sensitive tolerance to get a buffer product recommendation?

No -- either one alone is enough. Buffer Product Recommended triggers if Skin Type is Dry or Skin Tolerance is Sensitive, using an "or" rather than an "and" (line 41), so meeting just one of those two conditions is sufficient to recommend a buffer product; you don't need both.
