Freelance Rate Calculator
Calculate your ideal freelance hourly rate based on desired salary, expenses, taxes, and billable hours. Ensure you're pricing your services correctly.
About this calculator
This calculator works backward from the income you actually want to keep, not from a guessed hourly number. Start with a desired annual salary, then add self-employment tax, health insurance, retirement contributions, and business expenses — all the costs a traditional paycheck already has covered before it reaches an employee — and layer a profit margin on top so the business itself has room to grow rather than just break even. That total is divided by realistic annual billable hours, which is deliberately not a 40-hour week times 52: weeks off accounts for vacation and sick time, and billable hours per week should already exclude the marketing, invoicing, and admin time clients never pay for.
The result is a floor, not a target — the minimum you need to charge to replicate a comparable salary once every freelance-specific cost is covered, expressed as hourly, daily, and weekly rates plus the monthly and annual revenue needed to hit it. Two simplifications matter: self-employment tax defaults to the flat 15.3% rate rather than modeling the Social Security wage-base cap that kicks in at very high income, and no state or federal income tax is subtracted from the desired salary itself, since that figure represents the take-home pay being solved for. Treat the output as a starting point and check it against what comparable freelancers charge in your specialty and market.

Frequently Asked Questions
Isn't my rate just my old salary divided by roughly 2,000 working hours?
That shortcut is exactly how new freelancers underprice themselves. It ignores self-employment tax, which an employer used to split with you, plus health insurance and retirement contributions you now fund entirely yourself, plus the unbillable hours spent on marketing and admin that never show up on an invoice. This calculator folds all of that back in before dividing.
Does the Minimum Hourly Rate include state income tax?
No. It accounts for the flat 15.3% self-employment tax rate, whatever health insurance figure you enter, and your chosen profit margin, but the desired salary you enter is treated as the take-home target itself, so no state or federal income tax is deducted from it separately. Add a buffer if your state has significant income tax.
How should I use the Daily and Weekly Rate outputs when quoting a project?
Use the Daily Rate for project estimates you'd normally scope in workdays, and the Weekly Rate for retainer-style engagements billed by the week rather than the hour. Both are derived from the same minimum hourly figure, so quoting below either one puts you under the income floor this calculator computed for you.
What happens to my minimum rate if I take more weeks off?
The same annual total cost has to be earned across fewer working weeks, so your billable hours shrink and the hourly rate needed to hit the same income target rises. Taking four extra weeks off, for example, concentrates a full year of expenses and profit margin into a shorter working calendar.
