Restroom Cleaning Calculator
Cleaning time per fixture and supply quantities.
About this calculator
This calculator times a restroom service pass fixture by fixture using benchmarks from the ISSA Cleaning Times — the published industry-standard workloading guide from ISSA, The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association: 4 minutes per toilet or urinal, 2.5 minutes per sink, 1 minute per mirror (assumed one per sink), 5 minutes of floor mopping per restroom, and 4 minutes of restocking per restroom — then multiplies that per-pass total by however many times per day each restroom is serviced to get daily cleaning hours and labor cost. Supply consumption is modeled independently of cleaning frequency and instead driven by building occupancy: it assumes each of your daily building occupants uses a restroom 3 times a day (driving toilet-paper consumption at roughly one roll per 40 uses) and washes hands 4 times a day (driving paper-towel consumption at one roll per 50 hand-washes and soap at 4 pumps of 1.5 mL each), then projects monthly cost over a fixed 22 working days using flat unit prices for TP, towels, and soap. Notice that dailyUsers, not cleaningsPerDay, is what drives supply cost — cleaning more often doesn't consume more toilet paper, but it does add labor time, so those two levers move independently in the output and shouldn't be confused.
The per-fixture time assumptions are averages: a heavily used restroom with graffiti, vandalism, or unusually high traffic will run longer than the model predicts, and specialty fixtures (touchless dispensers, floor drains needing extra attention) aren't separately accounted for. Because monthly costs assume exactly 22 working days, facilities cleaned on weekends or with irregular schedules should scale the monthly figures rather than take them at face value.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the number of restrooms and the average toilets/urinals and sinks per restroom.
- Input the total daily building occupants (drives supply consumption estimates).
- Set the number of cleanings per day and the labor rate per hour.
- Review the minutes per pass and daily hours to plan staffing schedules.
- Use the monthly total cost (labor and supplies) to budget your facility contract.
How the result changes with Number of restrooms
| Number of restrooms | Minutes per full pass | Monthly total cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 107 | $3,139.52 |
| 4.5 | 160 | $4,076.72 |
| 9 | 320 | $6,888.32 |
| 15 | 533 | $10,637.12 |

How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersNumber of restrooms = 6, Toilets/urinals per restroom = 4, Sinks per restroom = 3, Daily building occupants = 200 = 6 input(s) provided
- Calculate Minutes per full passMinutes per full pass = toiletMinutes + sinkMinutes + mirrorMinutes + floorMinutes + restockMinutes213 = 213
- Calculate Monthly total costMonthly total cost = monthlyLaborCost + monthlySupplyCost5013.92 = $5,013.92
- Calculate Daily restroom cleaning hoursDaily restroom cleaning hours = dailyMinutes / 6010.65 = 10.65
- Calculate Daily labor costDaily labor cost = dailyHours * laborRate170.4 = $170.4

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does supply cost depend on daily occupants rather than how many times per day I clean?
Supply consumption is modeled entirely from dailyUsers — assuming 3 restroom visits and 4 hand-washes per occupant per day — and never references cleaningsPerDay at all. Cleaning more frequently increases labor time and cost but doesn't make people use more toilet paper or soap, so occupancy and cleaning frequency drive two separate parts of the total cost independently.
How is minutes-per-pass calculated, and how does that turn into daily hours?
totalMinutesPerPass sums fixture-level time across all restrooms in the facility, using the per-fixture benchmarks published in the ISSA Cleaning Times workloading guide: 4 minutes per toilet/urinal, 2.5 minutes per sink, 1 minute per mirror (one per sink), plus 5 minutes of mopping and 4 minutes of restocking per restroom. That per-pass total is then multiplied by cleaningsPerDay to get dailyMinutes, so increasing service frequency scales labor time linearly even though it leaves supply usage untouched.
Why are monthly costs based on exactly 22 working days?
The engine multiplies daily labor and daily supply cost by a fixed workDays constant of 22, approximating a typical five-day work week over a month. Facilities cleaned on weekends, holidays, or an otherwise irregular schedule should scale the monthly figures up or down rather than take the 22-day assumption at face value.
What assumptions drive the toilet paper, towel, and soap consumption estimates?
Toilet paper assumes one roll per 40 uses at 3 uses per occupant per day; paper towels assume one roll per 50 hand-washes at 4 hand-washes per occupant per day; and soap assumes 4 pumps of 1.5 mL per occupant per day, converted to gallons. These are fixed per-occupant behavioral averages rather than adjustable inputs, so unusually high-traffic or low-traffic restrooms may consume supplies at a different rate than the estimate shows.
