ADA Restroom Calculator
Check restroom ADA compliance for clear floor space, turning radius, grab bars, and sink height requirements.
About this calculator
This calculator checks a restroom's Room Width (inches) and Room Depth (inches) against two fixed ADA 2010 Standards minimums: a 60-by-56-inch clear floor space at the toilet (§604.3.1), and a 60-inch-diameter turning space for a wheelchair to complete a full turn (§304.3.1). Clear Floor Space OK flips from non-compliant to compliant the moment Room Width crosses 60 inches (holding depth at or above 56 inches) -- below 60 inches the room fails regardless of how much depth it has. Fixture Count, despite being an input, never enters any of the four output calculations at all -- grab bar length, sink height, and both compliance checks are fixed ADA figures or driven purely by room dimensions, so changing the fixture count leaves every output unchanged.
Grab Bar Length Needed and Max Sink Rim Height are constant ADA §604.5.1-604.5.2 figures (42 inches side wall plus 36 inches rear wall, each a minimum, not a room-scaled value) and a 34-inch maximum rim height that do not vary with room size at all. This tool checks dimensional and fixture-height minimums only -- it does not verify door swing, floor slope, or the full range of ADA restroom requirements, so a passing result here does not guarantee full code compliance.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Room Width (inches) and Room Depth (inches) as the interior finished dimensions of the restroom.
- Set Fixture Count to the number of plumbing fixtures (toilet, sink, urinal) in the space.
- Check Clear Floor Space OK — a result of 1 means the room meets minimum clear floor area for wheelchair approach.
- Verify 60-inch Turning Radius OK — a value of 1 confirms a wheelchair can execute a full turn inside the room.
- Use Grab Bar Length Needed (in) to specify the required grab bar at the toilet (side and rear walls).
- Note Max Sink Rim Height (in) — the sink rim must be at or below this height with knee clearance below.
What each input means
- Room Width (inches)
- Interior width of the restroom in inches
- Room Depth (inches)
- Interior depth of the restroom in inches
- Fixture Count
- Number of plumbing fixtures (toilet, urinal, sink)

Frequently Asked Questions
At what room width does the clear floor space check pass?
Clear Floor Space OK switches from 0 (non-compliant) to 1 (compliant) at exactly 60 inches of Room Width, provided Room Depth is also at least 56 inches -- the ADA 2010 Standards, §604.3.1, require a 60-by-56-inch clear floor space at the toilet, and the calculator flags any room that falls short of either dimension.
Does the number of fixtures change any of the compliance results?
No -- Fixture Count is collected as an input but is never used in the clear floor space check, the turning radius check, the grab bar length, or the sink height figure. All four outputs are driven entirely by room dimensions or fixed ADA constants, so changing fixture count has zero effect on the results.
Why is grab bar length always the same number?
Grab Bar Length Needed adds the ADA 604.5 side-wall requirement (42 inches) to the rear-wall requirement (36 inches) for a fixed total of 78 inches -- this is a code constant, not something the calculator derives from your room dimensions, so it stays the same regardless of what you enter for width, depth, or fixture count.
What does the 60-inch turning radius check actually require?
60-inch Turning Radius OK requires both Room Width and Room Depth to each be at least 60 inches, matching the ADA standard for a full unobstructed wheelchair turn (either a 60-inch diameter circle or an equivalent T-shaped turn) -- falling short on either dimension fails the check, even if the other dimension is generous.
