ADA Compliant (1=Yes)1
Maneuvering Clearance (sq ft)22.5
How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Door Width (inches) — the nominal width of the door leaf.
  2. Set Approach: 1=Front approach, 2=Hinge-side approach, or 3=Latch-side approach based on how a wheelchair user will approach.
  3. Set Automatic Door to 1 if the door has a power operator, which eliminates the hardware deduction.
  4. Check Clear Opening (inches) — must be 32 inches minimum; 36 inches is strongly recommended.
  5. Verify ADA Compliant output (1=Yes) and review Maneuvering Clearance (sq ft) to confirm floor space availability.

How the result changes with Door Width (inches)

Door Width (inches)Clear Opening (inches)
1210"
4240"
7876"
108106"

What each input means

Door Width (inches)
Nominal door width in inches. ADA requires 32" minimum clear opening.
Approach (1=Front, 2=Hinge, 3=Latch)
Direction of wheelchair approach affects required maneuvering clearance
Automatic Door (0=No, 1=Yes)
Automatic doors eliminate the 2" hardware deduction for clear opening

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Door Width (inches) = 36, Approach (1=Front, 2=Hinge, 3=Latch) = 1, Automatic Door (0=No, 1=Yes) = 0 = 3 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Clear Opening
    Clear Opening
    34 = 34
  3. Calculate ADA Compliant
    ADA Compliant
    1 = 1
  4. Calculate Maneuvering Clearance
    Maneuvering Clearance
    22.5 = 22.5
