Roof pitch describes how steeply a roof rises, expressed as the vertical Rise over a horizontal Run -- traditionally 12 inches, so a "6/12" roof rises 6 inches for every foot it runs. This calculator turns that ratio into three other readings framers and inspectors actually use: Pitch (Degrees), computed as the arctangent of Rise divided by Run; Pitch (Percent), the same ratio expressed as a percentage; and a Roof Type classification (Low Slope at a ratio of 0.25 or under, Conventional up to 0.75, Steep beyond that). Both Rise and Run push Pitch (Degrees) in opposite directions -- a taller Rise steepens the angle, while a longer Run flattens it for the same Rise -- but because the default Run (12 inches) is twice the default Rise (6 inches), a proportional change to Run moves the raw Rafter Length output more than the same proportional change to Rise does. Rafter Length here is the straight-line hypotenuse computed directly from whatever Rise and Run you enter (the square root of Rise squared plus Run squared) -- it only reads as "length per foot of horizontal run" when Run is left at the standard 12 inches; changing Run to model a different span turns it into the diagonal for that custom rise-and-run pair instead. The calculator does not account for overhang, hip or valley framing, or the extra length ridge and hip rafters need beyond a simple common rafter.

What does a roof pitch like 6/12 actually mean?
It means the roof rises 6 inches in vertical Rise for every 12 inches of horizontal Run -- the "12" is the standard reference Run used in pitch notation. This calculator lets you enter any Rise and Run pair, and if you leave Run at 12 inches the result reads exactly like the pitch notation carpenters use on blueprints.
Why does changing Run affect the result more than changing Rise?
Rafter Length is the hypotenuse of Rise and Run (the square root of Rise squared plus Run squared), and at the calculator's defaults Run (12 inches) is twice the size of Rise (6 inches) -- a proportional change to the larger value, Run, moves that hypotenuse more than an equal proportional change to Rise does.
How is the Roof Type classification determined?
Roof Type comes directly from the Rise-to-Run ratio: a ratio at or under 0.25 is classified Low Slope, up to 0.75 is Conventional, and anything steeper is Steep. Since the ratio is what sets the classification, any Rise-and-Run pair with the same ratio -- 3/12 and 6/24, for example -- lands in the same category.
Does the Rafter Length output include overhang or hip framing?
No -- Rafter Length is only the straight-line hypotenuse between the entered Rise and Run values. It does not add eave overhang, ridge board thickness, or the longer diagonal cuts needed for hip and valley rafters, so treat it as a starting figure for a simple common rafter rather than a full cut-list length.
