Corn
39.2 lbs
≈ 9 bags of sugar
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter total grain weight in lbs for your batch.
- Set percentages for corn, rye, malted barley, and wheat (must total 100%).
- The calculator shows weight of each grain in lbs, total percentage check, approximate water needed, and potential alcohol in gallons.
- Use these grain weights to weigh and mill each component before mashing.
- Bourbon requires at least 51% corn; rye whiskey requires at least 51% rye—verify your percentages meet legal definitions.
How the result changes with Total Grain Weight
| Total Grain Weight | Corn |
|---|---|
| 101 | 70.7 lbs |
| 351 | 245.7 lbs |
| 650 | 455 lbs |
| 900 | 630 lbs |
What each input means
- Total Grain Weight
- Total weight of all grains combined. One bushel of corn is 56 lbs, a common starting point.
- Corn
- Percentage of corn in the mash. Bourbon requires at least 51% corn by law.
- Rye
- Percentage of rye. Adds spicy character. Rye whiskey requires at least 51% rye.
- Malted Barley
- Percentage of malted barley. Provides enzymes for starch conversion. Typically 10-15%.
- Wheat
- Percentage of wheat. Adds a softer, sweeter character. Wheated bourbon uses 15-20%.
