How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the User Height in inches — the calculator estimates seated proportions from standing height.
  2. Enter Popliteal Height (floor to back of knee) and Seated Hip Breadth if known, or enter 0 to auto-estimate.
  3. Select the Chair Use: dining (most upright), desk, or lounge (most reclined).
  4. Enter Cushion Thickness (compressed) to adjust the seat height for cushioned builds.
  5. Review Seat Height, Seat Depth, Seat Width, Backrest Angle, and Lumbar Support Height as your cutting targets.

How the result changes with User height (in)

6115.36.8
7117.88.3
80209.6

What each input means

User height (in)
Standing height in inches. Used to estimate proportions if specific measurements aren't provided.
Popliteal height (in, 0=auto)
Floor to back of knee while seated. Enter 0 to estimate from height.
Seated hip breadth (in, 0=auto)
Widest point of hips when seated. Enter 0 to estimate from height.
Chair use
Purpose determines angles and proportions. Dining is most upright, lounge is most reclined.
Cushion thickness compressed (in)
Compressed cushion thickness. Lowers the wood seat pan accordingly.

What each result means

Seat height from floor (in)
Height of the seat surface (or frame if cushioned) from the floor.
Seat depth (in)
Front-to-back seat depth with 2" behind-knee clearance.
Seat width (in)
Minimum seat width with hip clearance.
Backrest angle from vertical (deg)
Recommended backrest recline angle.
Seat tilt back-to-front (deg)
Recommended downward slope from back to front of seat.
Lumbar support center (in above seat)
Height of lumbar support peak above the seat surface.
Backrest height (in)
Total backrest height above the seat surface.
Armrest height above seat (in)
Natural elbow rest height above the seat.
Overall chair height (in)
Total height from floor to top of backrest.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    User height (in) = 68, Popliteal height (in, 0=auto) = 0, Seated hip breadth (in, 0=auto) = 0, Chair use = 0 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Seat height from floor
    17 = 17
  3. Calculate Seat depth
    Seat depth = seatDepth - 2
    7.9 = 7.9
  4. Calculate Seat width
    14.6 = 14.6
  5. Calculate Backrest angle from vertical
    7 = 7
