Headband Length Calculator
Endbands material from spine width.
About this calculator
Headbands (endbands) are the small decorative bands sewn or glued at the head and tail of a book's spine, and this calculator sizes the material for either of the two common approaches. For pre-made ribbon headbands, it adds a fixed 5mm turn-in allowance to each side of the spine width (length = spine width + 2 × 5mm), since the ribbon needs to wrap slightly around the spine edge to sit securely. For hand-sewn woven endbands, it instead uses a rule of thumb that thread consumption runs to roughly eight times the spine width per headband — hand-sewing wraps thread repeatedly around a cord core as it travels the width of the spine, so the effective thread path is far longer than the spine itself.
Every book needs two headbands (head and tail), so the per-headband figure is doubled, then multiplied by the number of books, and finally inflated by your waste percentage (10% by default) to cover trimming and setup mistakes. For hand-sewn headbands, since two thread colors are typically alternated, the total is also split in half to show how much of each color to prepare. Keep in mind the 8× multiplier is an approximation calibrated to a typical weaving pattern — more elaborate multi-color or beaded endband patterns will consume noticeably more thread than this estimate, so treat the hand-sewn figure as a reasonable starting point rather than an exact cut length.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the book spine width in millimeters — use the Book Block Calculator to find this value.
- Select the headband type: pre-made ribbon (sold by the meter) or hand-sewn woven endband.
- Enter the number of books to calculate total headband material.
- Set the waste allowance percentage to account for trimming and cutting errors (10% is a safe default).
- Read the total length in cm, inches, and meters — purchase ribbon in the nearest convenient quantity.
- For hand-sewn headbands, use the thread per color output to prepare the correct thread lengths.

| 7.5 | 3.9 |
| 11 | 4.6 |
| 23 | 7.3 |
| 38 | 10.6 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the hand-sewn thread estimate so much longer than the pre-made ribbon length?
Pre-made ribbon just needs to span the spine width plus a small 5mm turn-in on each side, so it tracks close to the spine width itself. Hand-sewn woven endbands are different: the thread repeatedly wraps around a cord core as it travels across the spine, so the engine multiplies spine width by 8 to approximate that back-and-forth path — that's why the two headband types can differ by nearly an order of magnitude in material needed.
What is the "thread per color" output for, and when does it apply?
It only appears for hand-sewn (woven) headbands, where two thread colors are traditionally alternated to create the endband's pattern. The calculator takes the total hand-sewn thread length (after waste allowance) and splits it in half, since each color makes up roughly half of the total wraps — use this to know how much of each spool to prepare rather than cutting from a single total length.
Does the waste allowance apply differently to ribbon versus hand-sewn thread?
No — the waste percentage is applied identically as a multiplier on the final total length regardless of headband type, covering trimming mistakes for ribbon or knotting and tension slack for thread. The default 10% is a general safety margin; if you're new to hand-sewn headbands specifically, consider a higher percentage since thread tension mistakes are easier to make than ribbon cutting mistakes.
Why does every book need headband material calculated for two locations?
Books traditionally get a headband at both the head (top) and tail (bottom) of the spine, so the calculator always doubles the per-headband length before multiplying by book count — even though visually similar, the head and tail bands are sewn or glued as separate pieces, not one continuous piece.
