Adapted PE Calculator
Modified activity parameters for students with disabilities.
About this calculator
Staffing and cost estimates for adapted PE hinge far more on how severe each student's needs are than on how many total students share the gym. Aides/Paraprofessionals Needed comes from a support ratio keyed to Average Severity (one aide per 8 students at mild support needs, down to a 1:1 ratio at extensive/significant needs), applied to Students with Disabilities -- Total Class Size does not enter that calculation directly, since general-education classmates don't require paraprofessional support. The one exception: this calculator caps Students with Disabilities at Total Class Size (you cannot have more students needing support than are in the class at all), so at the input's upper end -- a small Total Class Size paired with a Students with Disabilities value that would otherwise exceed it -- lowering Total Class Size does reduce the effective count feeding Aides/Paraprofessionals Needed. For any Total Class Size at least as large as Students with Disabilities, that cap never binds and Total Class Size has no effect on staffing.
Modified Equipment Cost follows the same pattern: it scales with Students with Disabilities but is gated off entirely at the mildest severity level, since minor modifications (rule adjustments, peer support) typically don't require purchasing specialized equipment the way moderate-to-extensive accommodations do. Inclusive Activity (%) is the share of class time all students, disabled and non-disabled, participate in together rather than in separately adapted groups, and it steps down as severity rises (80% at mild or moderate, dropping to 40% at extensive), reflecting that more intensive individualized support often means more time working separately from the full group. Primary Disability Type does not change any of the cost or staffing numbers -- it only determines which specific equipment modifications (visual cues, tactile markers, sensory tools) the calculator lists, since different disability types call for different accommodations even at the same severity level and support ratio. This calculator implements general SHAPE America and IDEA-informed staffing patterns as a planning reference; actual accommodations, staffing ratios, and services must follow each student's individual IEP or 504 plan, which take precedence over any general formula.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Total Class Size and Students with Disabilities.
- Select the Average Severity of accommodations needed (Mild through Extensive).
- Select the Primary Disability Type most common in the class.
- Review the Aides/Paraprofessionals Needed result.
- Use Inclusive Activity (%) and Inclusive Activity (min) to plan the class period alongside the equipment and staffing cost estimates.
What each input means
- Total Class Size
- Total number of students in the PE class.
- Students with Disabilities
- Number of students requiring adapted PE modifications.
- Average Severity
- Average severity of accommodations needed.
- Primary Disability Type
- Most common disability type in the class.
- Class Period (min)
- Total class period length in minutes.
What each result means
- Aides/Paraprofessionals Needed
- Required support staff based on disability severity and count.
- Inclusive Activity (%)
- Percentage of activity time where all students participate together.
- Inclusive Activity (min)
- Minutes of inclusive whole-class activity.
- Adapted Activity (min)
- Minutes of separately adapted activities.
- Modified Equipment Cost ($)
- Estimated cost for adapted equipment (balls, targets, aids).
- Annual Aide Cost ($)
- Estimated annual paraprofessional cost for PE periods.
- Peer Buddies Needed
- Trained peer helpers for inclusive activities.
- IEP Goal Areas
- Recommended number of PE-related IEP objectives.
- Student:Adult Ratio
- Overall ratio including aides (target: 15:1 or less).
- Effective Activity Time (min)
- Actual activity time after transitions and warm-up.
- Extra Transition Time (min)
- Additional transition time needed for disability accommodations.
- Separate APE Class Recommended
- Recommended when more than 30% of the class needs disability accommodations at significant or extensive severity.
- Student:Adult Ratio Within Safe Range
- Whether the overall student-to-adult ratio (including aides) is at or below the 15:1 target.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't total class size affect the number of aides needed?
Paraprofessional aides support the specific students who need adapted PE accommodations, not the class as a whole, so Aides/Paraprofessionals Needed is calculated only from Students with Disabilities and Average Severity. A class of 60 with 3 students needing support requires the same aide count as a class of 15 with those same 3 students -- the general-education classmates around them don't change the support need. The one exception is at the extremes: Students with Disabilities can never exceed Total Class Size (you can't have more students needing support than are enrolled), so if you set Students with Disabilities high and then shrink Total Class Size below it, the effective count gets capped down to Total Class Size and Aides/Paraprofessionals Needed drops with it. That cap only matters when Students with Disabilities would otherwise be larger than the class itself.
Why is Modified Equipment Cost sometimes zero even with students needing support?
At the mildest severity level, this calculator assumes accommodations are mostly rule and space modifications plus peer support rather than specialized equipment purchases -- lowering a target, allowing extra attempts, or pairing with a peer buddy typically doesn't require buying anything new. Equipment costs only apply starting at moderate severity, where physical modifications like adapted balls, tactile boundary markers, or specialized grips more commonly become necessary.
Does the disability type change the staffing or cost numbers?
No -- Primary Disability Type only changes WHICH specific equipment modifications this calculator recommends (visual cues for hearing impairments, tactile markers for visual impairments, sensory-friendly equipment for autism, and so on). Aides/ Paraprofessionals Needed, Modified Equipment Cost, and every time-allocation number are all driven by Average Severity and Students with Disabilities, not by which category of disability is most common in the class.
What does the Separate APE Class Recommended flag mean?
It flags a specific combination this calculator checks for: when students needing accommodations make up more than 30% of the class AND Average Severity is Significant or Extensive. IDEA requires physical education for all students but also allows a separate Adapted PE class setting when integrated general PE can't adequately meet a student's needs -- this flag is a planning signal to evaluate that option, not an automatic placement decision, which must go through the IEP team process.
Is this calculator a substitute for following a student's IEP or 504 plan?
No -- this calculator applies general, severity-based staffing and modification patterns informed by SHAPE America Adapted PE guidance as a planning and budgeting reference. Actual services, accommodations, and staffing ratios for any individual student must follow that student's own Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan, which are legally binding and always take precedence over a general estimate like this one.
