The headline figure is a three-way product: the activity's MET value times your weight in kilograms times duration in hours. A MET is a multiple of resting energy use, so cycling at 6 METs for half an hour at 70 kg gives 210 kcal. Because all three terms multiply, none of them dominates — nudge the MET value, your weight or the clock by ten percent and each produces the identical 21-calorie shift, and doubling any one of them doubles the answer. That symmetry is the most useful thing to understand here: an extra fifteen minutes and a slightly harder pace are interchangeable levers. A second, quite different estimator sits underneath. If you supply both a heart rate and an age, the tool computes an alternative from heart rate intensity — your age-derived maximum sets the denominator, intensity scales a per-minute rate against body weight, and the total fills the HR Calories row, which reads 63.8 kcal for 70 kg over 30 minutes at 140 bpm and age 30. That path only takes over the headline number when the MET field is cleared to zero; while any MET value is present the MET result wins and heart rate merely populates its own row for comparison. The two disagree substantially by design, since the heart-rate model is a coarse linear approximation. The Intensity Level label is read straight off the MET value, switching to Moderate at 3 and Vigorous at 6. Not modelled: fitness level, terrain, gradient, altitude, heat, mechanical efficiency, or the resting calories you would have burned anyway during the same half hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which input should I be most careful about?

All three of the main ones equally. MET value, weight and duration are multiplied together, so a ten percent error in any of them produces exactly the same 21-calorie error at the default settings. Getting the MET value right matters most in practice only because published values vary widely for the same named activity.

Why does the HR Calories row differ so much from the main figure?

They are two independent models. The main number uses the MET product, while the heart-rate row scales a per-minute rate from your intensity against your age-derived maximum, giving 63.8 kcal where the MET route gives 210 for the same half-hour session. The heart-rate approximation is deliberately coarse and runs low.

How do I make the calculator use my heart rate instead?

Set the Activity MET Value field to zero. The engine prefers the MET result whenever that field holds any positive number, and falls back to the heart-rate estimate only when it is cleared — and the fallback also needs both a heart rate and an age above zero, otherwise it reports nothing.

What MET value should I enter for my workout?

The field's guidance offers walking at 3, cycling at 6, swimming at 7 and running at 8, and the comparison chart plots the same four activities beside your result, with walking pinned slightly brisker at 3.5. Compendium values run from about 2 for gentle stretching to 12 or more for competitive sport, so pick by effort rather than by name.

Why does the Intensity Level label ignore my heart rate?

It is graded purely on the MET number you entered, moving to Moderate at 3 and Vigorous at 6. A 140 bpm heart rate paired with a MET value of 2 will still read Light, because the label describes the activity you selected rather than the physiological response you recorded.
