Equipment selection and cost from your fitness goal and quality tier.

About this calculator

This calculator swaps entire equipment lists in and out based on Goal Type: cardio focus adds a single cardio machine and its floor space, strength focus adds a rack, bench, barbell, weight plates, and dumbbells (five items and three space blocks), and balanced adds both sets together. Quality Level (budget, mid-range, or commercial grade) then multiplies every item's price by 0.6x, 1.0x, or 1.8x. Across their full ranges at the default goal/quality combination, Goal Type swings Total Equipment Cost from $1,050 to $2,750 (cardio to balanced) while Quality Level swings it from $1,170 to $3,510 (budget to commercial) -- Quality Level's range is actually the larger of the two, so it's the bigger real-world lever on cost, even though switching goal types feels like the more dramatic change because it swaps entire item sets rather than scaling existing ones. Space Required works differently: Quality Level never touches it at all (equipment footprints don't change with build quality), so Goal Type is the only input that moves Space Required, by dozens of square feet.

Available Space (sq ft) and Budget ($) never feed into Total Equipment Cost or Space Required at all -- they're purely comparison thresholds, checked afterward to produce the Fits in Space? and Fits in Budget? flags and the Remaining Budget figure. Once the equipment list (and its cost) is fixed by Goal Type and Quality Level, Remaining Budget moves dollar-for-dollar with your entered Budget, and Space Utilization (%) moves inversely with Available Space (sq ft) for the same reason -- more available space always lowers the utilization percentage for a given equipment list, up to the 100% cap. Gym Membership Payoff (months) simply divides total cost by a flat $50/month average gym membership rate. This tool uses rough per-category cost and space estimates, not real product pricing or your room's actual layout.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the usable floor area in square feet and your total equipment budget.
  2. Select your goal type: 1 = cardio focus, 2 = strength focus, 3 = balanced.
  3. Choose quality level: 1 = budget, 2 = mid-range, 3 = commercial grade.
  4. Review total equipment cost, space required, and whether the setup fits your space and budget.
  5. Check the gym membership payoff months to see how quickly the home gym pays for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my available space not change my Total Equipment Cost?

Total Equipment Cost is built entirely from your Goal Type (which items get included) and Quality Level (the price multiplier applied to each item) -- Available Space (sq ft) is used only afterward, to check whether the resulting equipment list Fits in Space?, and never feeds into the cost calculation itself.

Why does changing Goal Type change the cost and space numbers so much?

Cardio focus adds one cardio machine and its floor space; strength focus adds five separate items (rack, bench, barbell, weight plates, dumbbells) across three space blocks instead; balanced adds both full lists together. Because these are entire item sets being swapped in or out, Goal Type moves Total Equipment Cost and Space Required by far more than any single quality-level change does.

How is Remaining Budget calculated?

Remaining Budget subtracts Total Equipment Cost (fixed by your Goal Type and Quality Level) from your entered Budget ($) -- since the cost side doesn't change with your budget, every additional dollar of Budget ($) shows up as an additional dollar of Remaining Budget on a one-to-one basis.

Why does more available space lower my Space Utilization percentage?

Space Utilization (%) divides the fixed floor space your equipment list requires by Available Space (sq ft) you entered -- a larger available area is a bigger denominator for the same equipment footprint, so it always lowers the utilization percentage (down to the same result once the ratio would exceed the 100% cap).
