This calculator computes Body Mass Index — weight divided by height squared — and bands it into the standard categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5-25 normal, 25-30 overweight, then three obesity classes at five-point steps. The Unit System selector decides which fields are read: Imperial uses Weight (lbs) with Height in feet and inches (applying the 703 conversion factor), while Metric reads the kilogram and centimeter fields instead — the two sets do not mix, so editing pounds while in Metric mode changes nothing. Whichever mode is active, height is the stronger lever in practice because it enters the formula squared and, in imperial mode, each foot is twelve inches: moving the feet field by one step shifts BMI far more than a single pound. The healthy weight range outputs invert the formula — multiplying your squared height by 18.5 and 24.9 — so they are pure functions of height and never move when weight changes. One structural caveat the number cannot show: BMI conflates muscle with fat and says nothing about distribution, which is why muscular athletes routinely land in the overweight band. The category edges are hard cutoffs, so a BMI of 24.9 and 25.1 are numerically trivial but carry different labels.

    Squaring rather than cubing is a deliberate approximation: body mass grows faster than height but slower than volume would suggest. It is also the index's main known weakness — it systematically reads high for tall people and low for short ones.

Adolphe Quetelet proposed weight divided by height squared while studying the statistical distribution of human measurements — he was describing populations, not diagnosing individuals. Ancel Keys coined the name 'body mass index' 137 years later, and noted in the same paper that it was only adequate as a population measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my BMI not change when I edit the weight field?

You are probably editing the field for the other unit system. In Imperial mode the engine reads Weight (lbs) and the feet/inches height fields; in Metric mode it reads the kg and cm fields. The unused set is ignored entirely, so match the Unit System selector to the fields you are editing.

Why does height move my BMI more than weight does?

Height enters the formula squared — BMI is weight over height times height — so a one percent taller measurement discounts the result by about two percent, while a one percent heavier weight raises it by exactly one percent. In imperial mode the effect is concentrated further, since each foot step is twelve inches.

Why does the healthy weight range stay fixed when I change my weight?

The range is derived from your height alone — it multiplies your squared height by the healthy BMI bounds of 18.5 and 24.9. It answers what you would weigh at those BMIs, so your current weight is irrelevant to it.

Is a BMI of 24.9 really different from 25.1?

Numerically, no — but the category bands are hard cutoffs at 18.5, 25, 30, 35, and 40, so the two values carry different labels (Normal weight versus Overweight). Treat anything within a few tenths of a boundary as borderline rather than a category switch.
