Screen Time Impact Calculator

Assess the impact of daily screen time on sleep quality, productivity, and overall well-being compared to outdoor time.

About this calculator

This digital-wellness calculator separates work and leisure screen exposure, adds them for a daily total, and multiplies that rounded total by seven for weekly hours. Work and leisure time affect those two totals symmetrically: one added hour has the same arithmetic effect in either field. The screen-to-outdoor ratio divides total screen hours by outdoor hours and rounds to one decimal. When outdoor time is zero, the engine substitutes 999 for any positive screen total rather than attempting division, so that value means “no outdoor denominator,” not a literal measured ratio. The Sleep Impact Score is driven mainly by minutes of screen use before bed. It takes discrete values of 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 at boundaries of any positive use, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes.

Leisure use above six hours adds one point, capped at 10. Work screen hours do not enter this score. Productivity Impact is a separate heuristic: leisure hours are multiplied by 1.2, outdoor hours subtract 0.5 each, and the result is constrained to 0–10. These outputs describe the calculator's chosen rules, not observed health effects for an individual. It does not account for screen brightness, content, breaks, device distance, work demands, exercise intensity, sleep schedule, chronotype, accessibility needs, or baseline health. In particular, “productivity” is an estimated index rather than measured job performance.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your daily work screen time (hours) and leisure screen time (hours) separately.
  2. Set screen time before bed (minutes) — pre-sleep screens disrupt melatonin production.
  3. Enter outdoor time (hours/day) to calculate the screen-to-outdoor balance ratio.
  4. Review Total Daily Screen Time (hours) and Sleep Impact Score to quantify the burden.
  5. Use Productivity Impact as a guide for setting healthier screen limits or scheduling regular breaks.

What each input means

Work Screen Time
Hours per day spent on screens for work or school.
Leisure Screen Time
Hours per day spent on screens for leisure (social media, gaming, streaming).
Screen Time Before Bed
Minutes spent on screens in the hour(s) before falling asleep.
Outdoor Time
Hours per day spent outdoors (exercise, walks, gardening, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do work and leisure screens affect every output equally?

No. Both add equally to daily and weekly screen totals, but only leisure hours enter Productivity Impact and the extra sleep-point rule. Pre-bed minutes control the base Sleep Impact Score.

Why can the screen-to-outdoor ratio show 999?

The engine returns 999 when outdoor hours are zero and screen time is positive. This is a finite sentinel for an undefined division, so it should not be interpreted as a precise 999-to-1 observation.

How is Productivity Impact calculated?

It starts with 1.2 times daily leisure screen hours, subtracts 0.5 times outdoor hours, constrains the result between 0 and 10, and rounds it to one decimal place.
