Grow Tent Sizing Calculator

Determine the ideal grow tent dimensions based on plant count, plant size, and training method.

About this calculator

Tent footprint is built from a per-plant space allowance that starts with Plant Size (1, 4, or 9 square feet for Small, Medium, and Large respectively) and is then scaled up by a Training Method multiplier -- 1.0x for no training, 1.3x for LST (low-stress training, which spreads growth laterally), and 1.6x for SCROG (screen of green, which trains an even wider, flatter canopy). That per-plant figure is multiplied by Number of Plants to get total square footage, which is then arranged into a roughly square-shaped footprint for Tent Width and Tent Length.

Plant Size is the dominant driver of Sq Ft per Plant on its own -- it sets the base allowance that Training Method then multiplies, so a Large plant even with no training (9 sq ft x 1.0 = 9 sq ft per plant) still needs more space than a Small plant trained with SCROG (1 sq ft x 1.6 = 1.6 sq ft per plant). Tent Height is set separately from the footprint calculation: it starts from a baseline tied to Plant Size (5 ft for Small, 6 ft for Medium, 7 ft for Large) and is raised to at least 6 ft whenever SCROG is selected, since a horizontal screen needs vertical clearance below it for the canopy to fill in.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the number of plants you plan to grow and select the Plant Size: Small (herbs, lettuce), Medium (peppers, tomatoes), or Large (squash, indeterminate tomatoes).
  2. Select your training method: none, LST (low-stress training), or SCROG — canopy training requires a wider tent footprint.
  3. Review the recommended Tent Width (ft), Tent Length (ft), and Tent Height (ft).
  4. Use the Sq Ft per Plant figure to verify adequate spacing before purchasing your tent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does SCROG training require more space than growing without training?

SCROG (screen of green) trains plants to grow laterally across a horizontal screen rather than growing tall, which spreads each plant's canopy over a wider area. This calculator applies a 1.6x space multiplier for SCROG versus 1.0x for no training -- the widest multiplier of the three training options -- and also enforces a minimum 6 ft tent height so there's enough vertical clearance below the screen for the canopy to fill in.

How much more space does a Large plant need compared to a Small one?

This calculator's base allowance jumps from 1 sq ft for Small (herbs, lettuce) to 4 sq ft for Medium (peppers, tomatoes) to 9 sq ft for Large (squash, indeterminate tomatoes) -- a 9x difference between the smallest and largest category before any training multiplier is applied. That per-plant figure is then multiplied by the number of plants and by the training-method multiplier to reach the total footprint.

Does the number of plants change the recommended tent height?

No -- Tent Height is derived only from Plant Size and Training Method, not from how many plants are grown. Adding more plants increases Tent Width and Tent Length (since the total footprint scales with plant count) but has no effect on how tall the tent needs to be.

Is training method or plant size the bigger factor in total tent footprint?

Plant Size sets the larger swing in this calculator's math: the base allowance ranges 9x from Small to Large (1 to 9 sq ft), while the Training Method multiplier ranges only 1.6x (1.0x to 1.6x). Training method still matters -- it can add 30-60% more space on top of whatever the plant size sets -- but plant size is the dominant driver of Sq Ft per Plant.
