Cemetery Plot Cost Calculator

Estimate total cemetery costs including plot, opening/closing, marker, and endowment fees by region and type.

About this calculator

Cemetery costs are rarely a single line item -- the plot itself is only one of several fees this calculator adds together. Plot Type is the biggest driver of Total Cost by far: a Single Plot has a $1,500 base cost, a Double/Companion Plot is $3,000, a Family Plot (4+) is $8,000, and a Mausoleum Crypt is $15,000, before any regional adjustment. Region then scales that base cost with a multiplier -- 0.7x for low-cost rural areas up to 1.8x for high-cost metro areas -- so the same plot type can cost more than double depending on where it's purchased.

On top of the plot cost, the calculator adds the Opening & Closing Fee you enter directly (raising it always raises Total Cost by the same amount), the cost of your chosen Marker/Headstone Type ($500 flat for a basic marker up to $5,500 for a custom monument), and an Endowment Fee automatically set at 12% of the plot cost to cover ongoing perpetual care of the cemetery grounds. Because it scales off the plot cost, Endowment Fee rises and falls with Plot Type and Region the same way Plot Cost itself does.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select the Plot Type: single, double/companion, family, or mausoleum crypt.
  2. Select your Region (rural, average, suburban, or metro) to apply regional pricing benchmarks.
  3. Enter the Opening & Closing Fee and select the Marker or Headstone Type.
  4. Review the Plot Cost, Marker Cost, Endowment Fee, and Total Cost breakdown.
  5. Use the total to compare cemetery options and budget for pre-planning or immediate need arrangements.

How the result changes with Opening & Closing Fee

$750.00$4,430.00
$1,500.00$5,180.00
$2,500.00$6,180.00

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Plot Type = 1, Region = 2, Opening & Closing Fee = 1000, Marker/Headstone Type = 2 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total Cost
    Total Cost
    4680 = $4,680
  3. Calculate Plot Cost
    Plot Cost
    1500 = $1,500
  4. Calculate Opening & Closing
    Opening & Closing
    1000 = $1,000

Frequently Asked Questions

Which input has the biggest effect on total cemetery cost?

Plot Type. Moving from a Single Plot ($1,500 base) up to a Mausoleum Crypt ($15,000 base) swings the total by roughly $15,000 at average regional pricing, and by more than $27,000 in a high-cost metro area, once the Endowment Fee's 12% scaling is included -- a far bigger range than adjusting Region, the Opening & Closing Fee, or the Marker/Headstone Type on their own.

How is the Endowment Fee calculated?

Endowment Fee is set at 12% of Plot Cost -- it isn't a separate flat fee you choose, it's derived automatically from whichever Plot Type and Region combination you select. It funds ongoing maintenance of cemetery grounds after burial, sometimes called perpetual care.

Does raising the opening and closing fee change the total cost dollar-for-dollar?

Yes. Opening & Closing is added directly into Total Cost with no multiplier or adjustment, so every dollar you raise that fee by raises the total by exactly the same amount, unlike Plot Type or Region which also indirectly move the Endowment Fee.

Why does the same plot type cost more in a metro area than a rural one?

This calculator applies a regional multiplier to the plot's base cost: 0.7x for low-cost rural areas, 1.0x for average cost, 1.3x for above-average suburban areas, and 1.8x for high-cost metro areas, reflecting real differences in cemetery land values and local demand across regions.
