How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Material (1-7), Required tensile strength (MPa), and Required heat resistance (°C).
- Set Required elongation (%) and Budget per kg ($).
- Review Best material match (ID) and Best match score (0-100).
- Use Selected material score and Selected tensile (MPa) to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Budget per kg ($)
| Budget per kg ($) | Best material match (ID) | Best match score (0-100) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 7 | 97.4 |
| 175 | 4 | 100 |
| 325 | 4 | 100 |
| 450 | 4 | 100 |
What each input means
- Material (1-7)
- 1=PLA, 2=ABS, 3=PETG, 4=Nylon PA12, 5=TPU 95A, 6=ASA, 7=Polycarbonate. Select to see properties.
- Required tensile strength (MPa)
- Minimum tensile strength needed. PLA ~50, ABS ~40, Nylon ~70, PC ~65 MPa.
- Required heat resistance (°C)
- Minimum heat deflection temperature needed. PLA ~55°C, ABS ~98°C, Nylon ~180°C.
- Required elongation (%)
- Minimum elongation at break. Rigid parts ~5%, flexible ~50%+, TPU ~450%.
- Budget per kg ($)
- Maximum acceptable material cost per kilogram.
What each result means
- Best material match (ID)
- Material ID that best matches all requirements (1=PLA, 2=ABS, 3=PETG, 4=Nylon, 5=TPU, 6=ASA, 7=PC).
- Best match score (0-100)
- Score of the best matching material against all requirements.
- Selected material score
- How well your selected material meets the stated requirements.
- Selected tensile (MPa)
- Tensile strength of the selected material.
- Selected HDT (°C)
- Heat deflection temperature of the selected material.
- Selected elongation (%)
- Elongation at break of the selected material.
- Selected cost ($/kg)
- Typical cost per kilogram of the selected material.
- Requirements met (of 4)
- Number of your 4 requirements the selected material satisfies.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersMaterial (1-7) = 1, Required tensile strength (MPa) = 50, Required heat resistance (°C) = 60, Required elongation (%) = 10 = 5 input(s) provided
- Calculate Best material matchBest material match = best.id3 = 3
- Calculate Best match score91.2 = 91.2
- Calculate Selected material score80.4 = 80.4
- Calculate Selected tensileSelected tensile = selected.tensile50 = 50
