How to Use This Calculator
  1. Measure blood pressure with an appropriately sized cuff after the child has been resting for at least 5 minutes.
  2. Enter Systolic BP and Diastolic BP readings in mmHg.
  3. Enter the child's Age in years (1–17), Sex (1 = Male, 2 = Female), and Height Percentile from the growth chart.
  4. The calculator computes Systolic and Diastolic percentiles using AAP 2017 normative data adjusted for age, sex, and height.
  5. Review the Classification — Normal, Elevated, Stage 1, or Stage 2 Hypertension — and follow AAP confirmation and management guidelines.

What each input means

Systolic BP
Systolic blood pressure reading in mmHg.
Diastolic BP
Diastolic blood pressure reading in mmHg.
Age
Child's age in years (1-17; use adult charts for 18+).
Sex
1 = Male, 2 = Female — normative values differ by sex.
Height Percentile
Child's height percentile (from growth chart) — BP norms vary by height.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Systolic BP = 100, Diastolic BP = 60, Age = 8, Sex = 1 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Systolic Percentile
    Systolic Percentile
    29.5 = 29.5
  3. Calculate Diastolic Percentile
    Diastolic Percentile
    45.5 = 45.5
