How to Use This Calculator
- Score upper arm posture (1-4), lower arm posture (1-3), and wrist posture (1-4) based on observed joint angles.
- Score neck posture (1-4) and trunk posture (1-4) using the RULA assessment criteria.
- Read the composite RULA-based ergonomic risk score.
- Higher scores indicate greater musculoskeletal risk — scores >= 7 require immediate investigation.
- Use the subscale breakdown to identify the highest-risk body region for targeted intervention.
How the result changes with Hours at workstation
| Hours at workstation | RULA score (1-7) |
|---|---|
| 2.1 | 4 |
| 4.85 | 4 |
| 8.15 | 5 |
| 11 | 5 |
What each input means
- Upper arm posture (1-4)
- 1=<20 deg, 2=20-45, 3=45-90, 4=>90 degrees flexion.
- Lower arm posture (1-3)
- 1=60-100 deg, 2=<60 or >100, 3=crossing midline.
- Wrist posture (1-4)
- 1=neutral, 2=0-15 deg, 3=>15 deg, 4=with twist.
- Neck posture (1-4)
- 1=0-10 deg, 2=10-20, 3=>20 deg flexion, 4=extension.
- Trunk posture (1-4)
- 1=supported/upright, 2=0-20, 3=20-60, 4=>60 deg.
- Hours at workstation
- Daily hours spent at the workstation.
What each result means
- RULA score (1-7)
- Rapid Upper Limb Assessment score.
- Action level (1-4)
- 1=acceptable, 2=investigate, 3=change soon, 4=change immediately.
- Workstation score (0-100)
- Overall ergonomic quality (higher = better).
- Risk category (1-3)
- 1=low, 2=moderate, 3=high MSD risk.
- Break interval (min)
- Recommended minutes between micro-breaks.
- Est. intervention cost ($)
- Estimated cost for ergonomic improvements.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersUpper arm posture (1-4) = 2, Lower arm posture (1-3) = 1, Wrist posture (1-4) = 2, Neck posture (1-4) = 2 = 6 input(s) provided
- Calculate RULA scoreRULA score5 = 5
- Calculate Action level3 = 3
- Calculate Workstation scoreWorkstation score40 = 40
