Solve For controls which single output this calculator actually computes from the other inputs: solving for Speed divides Distance by the Hours-and-Minutes total, solving for Time divides Distance by the Speed you enter, and solving for Distance multiplies Speed by the time total instead. Only two of the distance/time/speed inputs are read at once — whichever variable Solve For targets is computed, not read from its own input field, so entering a value there has no effect until you switch modes. With the default Solve For Speed selected, Distance is the input that moves the primary Speed output the most, since Body Weight and the Speed field itself play no role in that calculation at all. Calories Burned is estimated from a standard MET (metabolic equivalent) table keyed to the computed speed band — faster riding uses a higher MET value — multiplied by Body Weight and the resulting duration (the MET figure is interpolated between the Compendium's published band values rather than stepped, so the estimate moves smoothly rather than jumping when your speed crosses a band edge). Body Weight always affects the calorie estimate regardless of which mode you're solving for, since calorie burn is calculated from the resolved Speed and Time no matter which one was the original input. This is a MET-table estimate, not a power-meter or heart-rate-based measurement, so it does not account for terrain, wind, drafting, or individual fitness level.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't entering a value in the Speed field change anything when Solve For is set to Speed?
When Solve For is set to Speed, the Speed field is not read as an input at all — it exists only for the other two modes, where you already know your speed and want to find Time or Distance. In Speed mode, Speed is calculated from Distance divided by the Hours-and-Minutes total instead.
Does Body Weight affect my calculated Speed?
No — Body Weight has no effect on the Speed, Distance, or Time results in any Solve For mode. It is used only to estimate Calories Burned and Calories/Hour from the MET table once Speed and Time have already been determined, so changing it will move the calorie figures without touching the speed or pace numbers.
How does the calculator pick which MET value to use for calorie estimation?
It reads the resolved cycling speed against the six standard bicycling MET values published in the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities — 4.0 below 10 mph, 6.8 at 10-11.9, 8.0 at 12-13.9, 10.0 at 14-15.9, 12.0 at 16-19 and 15.8 above 20 mph — and interpolates smoothly between them rather than snapping to the nearest band, so nudging your time by a few seconds cannot make the calorie estimate jump. That MET value is then multiplied by Body Weight in kilograms and the ride duration.
If I switch from solving for Speed to solving for Time, do I need to re-enter Distance?
No — Distance is read as an input in both the Speed and Time modes, so the same value carries over. What changes is which field is treated as the unknown: in Time mode, Speed becomes a required input and the Hours/Minutes fields are ignored since Time is what's being calculated from Distance and Speed.
