Dive Trip Cost Calculator

Estimate total dive trip costs including flights, accommodation, dive packages, gear rental, Nitrox fills, food, and insurance.

About this calculator

This calculator itemizes a scuba trip into seven cost buckets and adds them into one bottom-line total, so you can compare destinations or dive operators on equal footing. Flights and insurance are entered as flat trip-wide amounts, while accommodation and food scale with the number of nights you enter (nightly rate times nights), and diving costs scale with the number of dives (per-dive rate times dive count). Gear rental is calculated separately from dive count, using the number of diving days instead — useful if you're renting for the whole trip rather than paying per dive, or if some diving days include multiple dives on a single rental.

Nitrox is broken out as its own line, multiplying a per-fill surcharge by however many enriched-air fills you plan to use, letting you see exactly what breathing Nitrox is adding to the trip versus diving on air. From the total, the calculator also derives two useful per-unit figures: an all-in cost per dive (total divided by dive count) and a cost per day (total divided by nights), both handy for comparing a resort-based week against a liveaboard or a multi-stop trip with a different mix of dives and non-diving days. Because every input is a simple estimate you supply, accuracy depends entirely on realistic numbers — actual dive centers often bundle gear, Nitrox, or park fees differently, so treat the output as a planning baseline to refine once you have real quotes, not a guaranteed final price.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter your flight cost and nightly accommodation rate along with the number of nights.
  2. Input the number of dives planned and the cost per dive (typically charged by the dive center).
  3. Add gear rental cost per day and the number of diving days if you are renting equipment.
  4. Set the Nitrox surcharge per fill and the number of Nitrox fills if diving enriched air.
  5. Enter your daily food budget and travel/dive insurance cost (e.g., DAN annual membership).
  6. Review Total Trip Cost, Cost per Dive, and Cost per Day to compare destinations and set your overall budget.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Flight / transport ($) = 500, Accommodation ($/night) = 120, Number of nights = 7, Number of dives = 10 = 11 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total trip cost
    Total trip cost = flightCost + accommodationTotal + divingTotal + gearRentalTotal + nitroxTotal...
    2325 = $2,325
  3. Calculate All-in cost per dive
    233 = $233
  4. Calculate Cost per day
    Cost per day = totalCost / nights
    332 = $332
  5. Calculate Accommodation total
    Accommodation total = accommodationPerNight * nights
    840 = $840

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is gear rental based on dive days instead of number of dives?

Rental gear is usually charged per calendar day, not per dive, since you keep the same set for however many dives you do that day. The calculator multiplies your daily rental rate by the number of dive days you enter — a separate input from dive count — so a plan with two dives per day on five dive days correctly charges for five rental days, not ten.

What's the difference between "all-in cost per dive" and "cost per day"?

All-in cost per dive divides your entire trip total — flights, lodging, food, and insurance included — by your dive count, showing the effective cost each dive carries once every expense is folded in. Cost per day instead divides that same total by number of nights, which is more useful for comparing trips of different lengths or mixing diving days with rest days.

Should I still fill in a Nitrox surcharge if I'm not sure I'll use enriched air?

You can leave nitroxFills at its default of 0 and the Nitrox line contributes nothing to your total — it only adds cost once you enter a fill count above zero, multiplying that count by your per-fill surcharge. Re-run the numbers with an estimated fill count later if you decide to dive Nitrox.

Does this calculator account for park fees, marine permits, or crew tips?

No — it only itemizes the seven cost buckets built into its inputs: flights, accommodation, dives, gear rental, Nitrox, food, and insurance. Fees, permits, and gratuities vary too much by destination to have their own line, so fold them into an existing category (for example, adding them to cost per dive or food budget) if you want them reflected in the total.
