Round Timer Calculator

Calculate total fight time, rest time, and session duration with custom round and rest intervals for boxing, MMA, Muay Thai, wrestling, and BJJ.

About this calculator

This calculator builds a round-by-round timeline from your chosen Discipline's standard round and rest lengths, then lets you override either one. Selecting a Discipline fills in the round/rest durations typically used for that sport at an amateur or standard professional level -- for example 3-minute rounds with 1-minute rest for boxing and Muay Thai (Muay Thai uses a longer 2-minute rest to reflect the additional recovery combat styles with more clinch and knee/elbow work typically need), or 5-minute rounds for MMA and BJJ. Round Length Override and Rest Length Override are left at 0 by default specifically so the calculator falls back to those discipline defaults; entering any value above 0 replaces the default entirely rather than adjusting it, so there is no in-between state -- a small positive override applies fully rather than nudging the standard duration.

Total Fight Time is simply Number of Rounds multiplied by the round length in use, and Total Rest Time multiplies the rest length by one fewer than the round count, since there is no rest period after the final round. Total Session Time adds both together to give the full time-on-the-clock a training session or simulated bout will take, useful for blocking out gym time or planning a conditioning circuit around a specific fight format.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Select your Discipline to apply standard round and rest lengths (Boxing, MMA, Muay Thai, Wrestling, or BJJ).
  2. Set the Number of Rounds for your session or fight simulation.
  3. Optionally override Round Length and Rest Length for custom workout structures.
  4. Review Total Session Time, Total Fight Time, and Total Rest Time.
  5. Use these totals to plan conditioning workouts that match your target fight format.

What each input means

Discipline
Select your combat sport to set default round and rest durations. You can override these below.
Number of Rounds
Total number of rounds. Professional boxing is 12, MMA title fights are 5, amateurs typically 3.
Round Length Override
Custom round length in seconds. Leave at 0 to use the default for your selected discipline.
Rest Length Override
Custom rest period in seconds. Leave at 0 to use the default for your selected discipline.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Discipline = 1, Number of Rounds = 3, Round Length Override = 0, Rest Length Override = 0 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total Session Time
    Total Session Time
    17m = 17m
  3. Calculate Total Fight Time
    Total Fight Time
    15m = 15m
  4. Calculate Total Rest Time
    Total Rest Time
    2m = 2m
  5. Calculate Round Length
    Round Length
    5m = 5m

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does increasing Number of Rounds increase Total Fight Time but not always by the same amount per round?

Total Fight Time is Number of Rounds multiplied by whichever round length is in effect -- the discipline default or your override -- so each additional round adds a fixed amount equal to that round length. The reason it can look uneven across disciplines is that the round length itself differs: MMA's 5-minute rounds add more time per round than boxing's 3-minute rounds, not that the relationship itself is inconsistent.

What happens if I leave Round Length Override or Rest Length Override at 0?

A value of 0 in either override field is read as "use the selected Discipline's standard duration," not as a literal zero-length round or rest period. Entering any number above 0 replaces the discipline default outright for that field, so there is no partial blend between the two -- you are either using the standard duration or your custom one.

Why does Muay Thai default to a longer rest period than boxing despite using the same 3-minute round length?

The discipline defaults reflect typical amateur/standard bout conventions rather than a single formula -- Muay Thai's clinch work and knee/elbow strikes are generally considered more physically taxing per round, and its standard rest convention (2 minutes) reflects that, compared to boxing's 1-minute rest at the same round length. Both are overridable if your gym or federation uses different intervals.

Does Total Session Time include time for equipment changes or breaks between weight classes?

No -- Total Session Time is strictly the sum of Total Fight Time and Total Rest Time as calculated from the round and rest lengths and round count you set. It does not add any buffer for warmups, cool-downs, cornering between rounds beyond the rest period itself, or administrative breaks, so treat it as the pure clock time of the rounds and scheduled rests, not the full duration of a training session or event.

Can I use this to plan a workout with more rounds than a real fight would have?

Yes -- Number of Rounds accepts up to 15, well beyond a typical professional bout's round count, specifically so it can double as a conditioning-circuit planner. Combine a higher round count with a discipline's standard or your own custom round/rest lengths to block out interval-training time on the clock.
