About this calculator
This calculator totals rugby union match points using the standard scoring values: a try is worth 5 points, a penalty try (awarded by the referee for a professional foul that denies a probable try) is worth 7 and carries an automatic conversion, a successful conversion kick is worth 2, and both penalty goals and drop goals are worth 3 each. The engine simply multiplies each count by its point value and sums them, so accuracy depends entirely on entering correct raw counts rather than derived stats. It also reports a "Try Scoring %" — the share of total points that came from tries and penalty tries combined, versus kicks (conversions, penalty goals, drop goals) — as a rough gauge of attacking versus territorial/kicking style; a higher percentage suggests a team that ran in scores rather than relying on the boot.
One assumption worth flagging: the calculator does not validate that conversions can't exceed tries plus penalty tries (the help text notes this but the math doesn't enforce it), so entering more conversions than you had try-scoring opportunities will silently inflate the total. It also doesn't distinguish rugby union from rugby league, which uses different point values (a try is 4 points in league, with a 2-point goal) — this tool is union-only, so league fans plugging in league stats will get union totals instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a penalty try worth 7 points instead of the usual 5?
A penalty try is awarded when the referee judges that foul play by the defense prevented a probable try, so it's scored as though the try had actually happened plus a guaranteed conversion — 5 for the try and 2 for the automatic conversion, for 7 total. This calculator adds penalty tries directly into the tryPoints total at 7 points each, separate from the conversions field, so you don't need to (and shouldn't) also enter a conversion for a penalty try.
Does the calculator stop me from entering more conversions than I actually had?
No. The engine just multiplies whatever conversions count you enter by 2 points and adds it to the total — it doesn't check that conversions stay within tries plus penalty tries scored. The help text flags this as a rule you should self-enforce; entering an inflated conversions count will silently produce a total higher than what actually happened in the match.
Can I use this calculator for rugby league scoring instead of union?
No, this tool is union-only and hard-codes union's point values (5-point try, 2-point conversion, 3-point penalty/drop goal, 7-point penalty try). Rugby league uses a different scale — a 4-point try and a 2-point goal, with no drop-goal distinction from a regular goal — so entering league stats here will compute a union-style total that doesn't match the actual league score.
What does the Try Scoring % actually measure?
It's the share of total points that came from tries and penalty tries combined, divided by the overall total, expressed as a percentage. It's a rough style indicator: a team with a high percentage scored most of its points by running the ball into the try zone, while a low percentage means points came mainly from kicking (conversions, penalty goals, and drop goals) rather than crossing the line.
