How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the pitcher earned runs allowed.
- Input the total innings pitched, including partial innings as a decimal (e.g., 6.2 innings).
- Review the Earned Run Average (ERA) calculated as (earned runs divided by innings pitched) times 9.
- Compare the ERA against MLB averages: under 3.00 is excellent, 4.00-5.00 is league average.
- Track ERA across multiple seasons and input the combined totals to calculate career ERA.

What each input means
- Earned Runs
- Total earned runs allowed by the pitcher. Unearned runs (from errors) are excluded.
- Innings Pitched
- Total innings pitched using baseball notation (e.g. 6.1 = 6⅓ innings, 6.2 = 6⅔ innings).
What each result means
- Earned Run Average
- Average earned runs allowed per 9 innings pitched. Lower is better.
- ERA Rating (1-5)
- 1 = Below Average (>4.50), 2 = Average (3.76-4.50), 3 = Above Average (3.01-3.75), 4 = Excellent (2.01-3.00), 5 = Elite (≤2.00).
- Quality Level (1-5)
- Overall pitching quality on a 1-5 scale based on ERA thresholds.
