Soccer Expected Goals (xG) Calculator
Estimate expected goals from shot data including location, type, and accuracy. Evaluate finishing quality and shot selection.
About this calculator
Expected goals (xG) models used by professional analytics departments are built from historical databases of hundreds of thousands of shots, weighing angle, distance, defensive pressure, and body part. This calculator is a simplified stand-in that instead applies flat conversion rates by shot category: about 12% for a shot inside the box, 3% outside the box, 76% for a penalty kick, and 6% for a header — figures chosen to roughly track typical professional conversion rates for each category, not derived from a live statistical model. Because headers and box location can overlap (a header taken from inside the box is still a header), the engine subtracts an estimated overlap before applying box-location rates to the remaining non-header, non-penalty shots, so it isn't simply summing all five input categories independently — it's trying to avoid double-counting the same shot under two different rates.
Total xG is the sum of those adjusted category values. xG per shot divides that total by shot volume, useful for comparing shot selection quality between two performances with very different shot counts. Shot accuracy is a separate, simpler stat — just shots on target over total shots — that measures accuracy, not quality of chance. The xG outperformance figure is the least standard output here: it's a heuristic derived from this calculator's own xG total scaled by shot accuracy and the share of shots taken from inside the box, meant to gesture at how much a clinical finisher might exceed their raw xG rather than a validated metric — treat it as a directional signal, not a number to cite alongside real xG data.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Total Shots and Shots on Target for the match or period being analyzed.
- Break shots down by location: Shots Inside Box and Shots Outside Box.
- Enter Penalty Kicks and Headers to apply their distinct conversion rates.
- Review the Expected Goals (xG) value - a penalty is approximately 0.76 xG, an inside-box shot about 0.12 xG, an outside-box shot about 0.03 xG, and a header about 0.06 xG.
- Check xG Per Shot and Shot Accuracy to gauge shot selection and finishing, and xG Outperformance Potential to see how much a clinical finisher might exceed the raw xG.
How the result changes with Shots Inside Box
| Shots Inside Box | Expected Goals (xG) |
|---|---|
| 5 | 1.72 |
| 7.5 | 1.94 |
| 15 | 2.62 |
| 25 | 2.62 |
What each input means
- Total Shots
- Total shots attempted including on-target, off-target, and blocked.
- Shots on Target
- Shots that required a save or resulted in a goal.
- Shots Inside Box
- Shots taken from inside the 18-yard penalty area.
- Shots Outside Box
- Shots taken from outside the 18-yard penalty area.
- Penalty Kicks
- Number of penalty kick attempts.
- Headers
- Number of headed shot attempts.
What each result means
- Expected Goals (xG)
- Estimated number of goals based on shot quality and location. Higher xG means better chances created.
- xG Per Shot
- Average expected goal value per shot. Higher values indicate better shot selection.
- Shot Accuracy
- Percentage of shots that were on target.
- xG Outperformance Potential
- Estimated potential to exceed xG based on shot accuracy and quality. Clinical finishers consistently outperform their xG.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are the fixed conversion rates (12%, 3%, 76%, 6%) chosen, and are they based on my own shot data?
They're flat, fixed rates baked into the calculator — 0.12 for inside-box shots, 0.03 for outside-box shots, 0.76 for penalties, and 0.06 for headers — chosen to roughly track typical professional conversion rates for each category. They aren't derived from your own shot data or any live statistical model; real professional xG models instead weigh angle, distance, defensive pressure, and shot type from historical databases of hundreds of thousands of shots.
Why does entering Headers change my Expected Goals from box-location shots too?
Because a header taken from inside the box would otherwise get counted under both the header rate and the inside-box rate. The engine estimates an overlap and subtracts it from your inside-box shot count before applying box-location rates to the remaining non-header, non-penalty shots, so headers and box-location shots aren't simply summed independently.
What does xG Per Shot tell me that Expected Goals doesn't?
xG per shot is total expected goals divided by total shots, which normalizes for shot volume — it's useful for comparing shot selection quality between two performances with very different shot counts, since a high total xG built from many low-quality shots looks different from the same xG built from fewer high-quality ones.
How seriously should I take the xG Outperformance Potential number?
Not very literally — it's a heuristic this calculator invents by scaling your total xG by shot accuracy and the share of shots taken from inside the box. It isn't a validated statistic used in professional analytics; treat it as a rough directional signal about finishing quality, not a number to cite alongside real xG data.
