Swim Training (Water Polo) Calculator
Swimming fitness plan specific to water polo demands.
About this calculator
This tool builds a water polo-specific swim practice from just your target yardage (1,000-8,000 yd) and available pool time (30-150 min), adjusting for training focus and swimmer level rather than handing back a generic competitive-swimming set. Four focus modes — endurance, speed, game simulation, and active recovery — each carry their own preset split of warm-up, main set, sprint/skill work, and cool-down (for example, game simulation runs a leaner 40% main set but a heavier 35% sprint block, while recovery flips that toward warm-up and cool-down and away from sprinting). Each focus also sets its own rest percentage of total session time, which the calculator uses to separate "swim minutes" from "rest minutes" before deriving your average pace per 100 yards. Because water polo swimming is done head-up far more than pool freestyle, the calculator assigns a head-up percentage by focus (20-50%) and reports the yardage that implies.
Sprint rep distance steps up from 25 to 50 yards once you select advanced or elite swim level, with rest between reps shortest for game-simulation work and longest for endurance sets. Calorie burn is a simple linear estimate (a base rate plus level and focus adjustments) — treat it as a ballpark, not a metabolic measurement, since it doesn't account for body weight or actual effort. The eggbeater-kick treading minutes scale with focus intensity too, reflecting water polo's unique demand for vertical leg endurance that lap swimming never trains.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Total yardage, Session length (min), and Training focus (1-4).
- Set Swim level (1-4).
- Review the Warm-up (yards) result.
- Use Main set (yards) and Sprint/skill (yards) to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Total yardage
| Total yardage | Warm-up (yards) |
|---|---|
| 1,750 | 315 |
| 2,625 | 473 |
| 5,250 | 945 |
| 8,000 | 1,440 |
What each input means
- Total yardage
- Target total swim yardage for the session. WP practices typically range 2500-5000 yards.
- Session length (min)
- Total available pool time in minutes including rest intervals.
- Training focus (1-4)
- 1 = endurance base, 2 = speed development, 3 = game simulation, 4 = active recovery.
- Swim level (1-4)
- 1 = beginner, 2 = intermediate, 3 = advanced, 4 = elite. Affects rep distances and intensity.
What each result means
- Warm-up (yards)
- Yardage for the warm-up phase — easy swimming with stroke drills.
- Main set (yards)
- Yardage for the primary training set — the bulk of conditioning work.
- Sprint/skill (yards)
- Yardage dedicated to sprint intervals and water polo-specific drills.
- Cool-down (yards)
- Easy swimming to finish the session and promote recovery.
- Avg pace / 100 yd (sec)
- Average swimming pace in seconds per 100 yards.
- Head-up swim (yards)
- Yards to be swum with head-up water polo stroke.
- Sprint repetitions
- Number of sprint reps in the speed/skill phase.
- Sprint rest interval (sec)
- Rest between sprint repetitions in seconds.
- Treading work (min)
- Minutes of eggbeater kick treading drills to include.
- Total rest time (min)
- Cumulative rest time built into the session.
- Estimated calories
- Approximate calorie expenditure for the session.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the same total yardage produce different splits depending on training focus?
Each of the four focus modes carries its own preset percentages for warm-up, main set, sprint/skill, and cool-down. Endurance runs a 55% main set with only 15% sprint work, while game simulation flips that to a leaner 40% main set and a heavier 35% sprint block. The calculator multiplies your total yardage by whichever preset applies, so switching focus changes the yardage breakdown even if you leave the total unchanged.
How is average pace per 100 yards calculated, and why doesn't it match my actual splits?
The calculator subtracts the focus-specific rest percentage from your session minutes to get pure swim minutes, converts that to seconds, and divides by total yardage in 100-yard units. It's a session-wide average assuming even pacing throughout, so it won't match any individual set's actual pace — warm-up and sprint intervals swim at very different speeds than this single blended number suggests.
Why does sprint rep distance jump from 25 to 50 yards at the advanced level?
The calculator uses swim level to pick a fixed rep distance: 25 yards for beginner and intermediate swimmers, 50 yards once you select advanced or elite. Sprint reps are then just the sprint-phase yardage divided by that rep distance, so advanced/elite swimmers get fewer, longer reps rather than more short ones for the same total sprint yardage.
How accurate is the estimated calorie count?
It's a simple linear formula — a base rate of 6 calories per minute, plus 1.5 per swim level, plus a flat bonus of 1-3 calories per minute depending on training focus — multiplied by swim minutes. It doesn't factor in your body weight, stroke efficiency, or actual effort, so treat it as a rough session estimate rather than a precise metabolic reading.
