This calculator estimates trip fuel cost from Trip Distance, Fuel Efficiency, and Fuel Price, using one of two formulas selected by Unit System. In Imperial mode (the default), Fuel Needed is Trip Distance divided by Fuel Efficiency (miles per gallon), so a higher Fuel Efficiency means fewer gallons burned. In Metric mode, Fuel Efficiency instead means liters burned per 100 km, so the formula multiplies instead of divides -- a higher number there means MORE fuel burned, the opposite real-world relationship. Total Fuel Cost is always Fuel Needed times Fuel Price, so Trip Distance and Fuel Price both raise Total Fuel Cost by a comparable, consistent share in either unit system -- unlike Fuel Efficiency, whose effect on cost literally reverses direction depending which mode you're in, so this calculator does not treat it as an input with one fixed effect. Cost Per Mile, by contrast, is unaffected by Trip Distance entirely: since Total Fuel Cost is itself proportional to Trip Distance, dividing one by the other cancels Trip Distance out algebraically, leaving Cost Per Mile as purely a function of Fuel Efficiency and Fuel Price. Fuel Price never appears in the Fuel Needed calculation in either unit system -- it only affects the dollar totals, never the gallons or liters burned. This is a simple linear model that ignores real-world variables like elevation, driving style, idling, and highway versus city mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does raising Fuel Efficiency always lower my Total Fuel Cost?

Not always -- it depends on Unit System. In Imperial mode, Fuel Efficiency means miles per gallon, so raising it lowers fuel burned and cost. In Metric mode, the same field means liters burned per 100 km, so raising it actually increases fuel burned and cost -- the opposite relationship. Make sure you're reading Fuel Efficiency in the units the selected mode expects.

Why doesn't Fuel Price affect the Fuel Needed figure?

Fuel Needed is calculated purely from Trip Distance and Fuel Efficiency in both unit systems -- Fuel Price never enters that formula. Fuel Price only scales the dollar figures (Total Fuel Cost and Cost Per Mile), never the physical gallons or liters your vehicle actually burns.

Why is Cost Per Mile the same no matter how long my trip is?

Cost Per Mile is Total Fuel Cost divided by Trip Distance, and Total Fuel Cost is itself proportional to Trip Distance -- so Trip Distance cancels out of that ratio algebraically. A 50-mile errand and a 500-mile road trip with the same Fuel Efficiency and Fuel Price show the identical Cost Per Mile.

Do Trip Distance and Fuel Price move Total Fuel Cost by the same amount?

Yes, in either unit system -- Total Fuel Cost is a straight product that includes both as direct multipliers, so a given percentage increase in Trip Distance and the same percentage increase in Fuel Price each raise Total Fuel Cost by a comparable share.

What's the difference between this calculator and choosing Metric mode?

Selecting Metric mode doesn't convert your existing Imperial numbers -- it switches the formula to expect Trip Distance in kilometers, Fuel Efficiency in liters per 100 km, and Fuel Price per liter, and computes Fuel Needed by multiplying instead of dividing. Re-enter your figures in metric units rather than just flipping the toggle on the same numbers.
