Pascals sit underneath everything here, which makes the default entry a deliberate self-test: 14.696 PSI is sea-level atmospheric pressure, and it returns 101,325.393 Pa and 760.005 mmHg — both a fraction above the defined 101,325 Pa and 760 mmHg that mark one standard atmosphere, because the PSI factor of 6894.76 is itself a rounded figure. Bar is the clean one at exactly 100 kilopascals, and the atmosphere is exact by definition. Inches of water and inches of mercury can be entered but produce no column of their own, so those readings come back as pascals and kilopascals. The omission that causes real trouble is gauge versus absolute pressure. Every figure on this page is treated as an absolute pressure, while the instruments most people read from are gauges that report the excess over surrounding air: a tyre showing 32 PSI is really holding about 46.7 PSI absolute, and a blood-pressure cuff reading 120 mmHg is 120 above atmospheric, not 120 in total. Nothing here adds or removes that offset for you. There is also no temperature, so the gas-law link between heat and pressure is absent — the same tyre reads higher after a motorway run than it did cold, and this converter has no way to express that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my tire gauge reading absolute or gauge pressure?

Gauge, like almost every dial you will meet. It reports how much the tyre exceeds the air around it, so add roughly 14.7 PSI to get the absolute value this converter assumes you are giving it. Ignoring that offset is the single most common pressure mistake.

Why does 14.696 PSI not land on exactly one atmosphere?

The atmosphere is defined as precisely 101,325 pascals, but the PSI factor stored here is the rounded 6894.76, so the arithmetic overshoots to 101,325.393 Pa. The residue is four parts per million and shows up in the mmHg row as 760.005 rather than 760.

How do bar and PSI relate?

One bar is exactly 100 kilopascals, which works out at about 14.5038 PSI, so bar readings run a little under atmospheres rather than matching them. European equipment labelled in bar and North American equipment labelled in PSI are roughly a factor of fifteen apart.

Can I convert a vacuum reading?

Only if you first express it as an absolute pressure. Vacuum gauges usually count downward from ambient, in inches of mercury below atmospheric, and this page has no concept of a reference point — it will read a small positive number as a small positive pressure.

Does temperature affect these conversions?

Not the conversions themselves, which are pure unit arithmetic, but it certainly affects the pressure you measured. A sealed volume of gas rises in pressure as it warms, and nothing on this page models that relationship or asks you for a temperature.
