Crop Insurance Loss Claim Calculator
Yield loss percent for claim estimate.
About this calculator
This calculator models a federal APH (Actual Production History) yield-protection indemnity claim, using the same Yield Protection mechanics USDA's Risk Management Agency (RMA) describes in its own published crop insurance plan overview: it multiplies your APH yield by your elected coverage level (50-85%) to get the guaranteed yield, then compares that guarantee to your actual harvested yield — any shortfall, multiplied by your elected price per unit and total insured acres, is the estimated indemnity payment. One detail worth catching: the displayed "yield loss %" is calculated against your full APH yield (aphYield − actualYield) / aphYield, not against the guarantee — so it will read higher than the percentage of the guarantee you actually lost, since coverage below 100% means some of that loss falls in your deductible and produces no payment at all. The deductible percentage shown (100% minus coverage level) is exactly that gap: if you carry 75% coverage, the first 25% of yield loss relative to APH is yours to absorb before the guarantee — and therefore any indemnity — kicks in.
Net claim benefit subtracts your premium paid (already net of federal subsidy, if you enter your out-of-pocket share) from the estimated indemnity, giving a rough sense of whether the policy paid for itself this year. This is a Yield Protection-style estimate, not Revenue Protection: it doesn't model harvest-price adjustments, so if your policy includes revenue protection with a harvest-price option, treat this as directional guidance and reconcile the final number against your actual adjuster determination before relying on it.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your APH yield and select a coverage level.
- Set the actual harvest yield per acre from field measurements.
- Input the elected price per unit and total insured acres.
- Review the calculated total indemnity payment and net claim benefit.
- Compare to your adjuster estimate and document any discrepancies.
How the result changes with APH yield (bu/acre)
| APH yield (bu/acre) | Yield loss (%) | Total indemnity ($) |
|---|---|---|
| 90 | -33.3 | $0.00 |
| 135 | 11.1 | $0.00 |
| 270 | 55.6 | $72,600.00 |
| 450 | 73.3 | $191,400.00 |
What each input means
- APH yield (bu/acre)
- Your Actual Production History average yield per acre.
- Coverage level (%)
- Elected coverage level (50%-85%). Higher = lower deductible.
- Elected price ($/bu)
- Price election from your crop insurance policy (projected price or harvest price).
- Actual yield (bu/acre)
- Harvested yield per acre for this crop year.
- Insured acres
- Total acres covered under the policy.
- Premium paid ($/acre)
- Your share of the insurance premium per acre (after subsidy).
What each result means
- Guaranteed yield (bu/acre)
- APH yield multiplied by coverage level.
- Yield shortfall (bu/acre)
- Bushels per acre below the guarantee.
- Yield loss (%)
- Percentage yield loss relative to APH.
- Total indemnity ($)
- Estimated insurance payment for the claim.
- Net benefit ($)
- Indemnity minus premium paid. Your net financial recovery.
- Deductible (%)
- Percentage of loss you absorb before coverage kicks in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the displayed 'yield loss %' higher than the percentage of my guarantee that I actually lost?
The calculator computes yield loss % as (APH yield − actual yield) / APH yield — measured against your full APH yield, not against your coverage guarantee. If you carry 75% coverage, some of that percentage loss falls inside your deductible and generates no indemnity payment at all, so this figure will always read higher than the portion of the guarantee you actually recovered.
How does coverage level affect my deductible and indemnity payment?
Guaranteed yield equals APH yield multiplied by your coverage level (50-85%), and the deductible percentage is simply 100% minus that coverage level. Only yield lost below the guarantee — not below your full APH yield — generates an indemnity, so a higher coverage level both raises your guarantee and shrinks the gap you have to absorb before payment kicks in.
What does 'net claim benefit' actually measure?
It's total indemnity (yield shortfall × elected price × acres) minus your total premium paid (premium per acre × acres) — a rough measure of whether the policy paid for itself this year. Enter only your out-of-pocket premium share, since the calculator doesn't separately account for the federal subsidy portion.
Does this calculator handle Revenue Protection (RP) policies with a harvest-price option?
No — this is a Yield Protection-style estimate that doesn't model harvest-price adjustments. If your policy includes revenue protection, treat the result as directional guidance only and reconcile against your actual adjuster determination, since a harvest-price swing could change the real indemnity substantially.
