What each input means

Produce Weight
Total weight of fresh produce to be canned in pounds.
Jar Size
1 = Half-Pint (8 oz), 2 = Pint (16 oz), 3 = Quart (32 oz).
Packing Method
1 = Raw pack (60% fill factor — food shrinks during processing), 2 = Hot pack (75% fill factor — pre-cooked food packs tighter).

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Produce Weight = 10, Jar Size = 2, Packing Method = 2 = 3 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Jars Needed
    Jars Needed = ceil(produceVolumeOz / (8 * fillFactor))
    14 = 14
  3. Calculate Jar Size
    Jar Size
    16 = 16
  4. Calculate Total Jar Capacity
    Total Jar Capacity
    224 = 224
