Art Shipping Cost Calculator

Crate and shipping cost from artwork dimensions and value.

About this calculator

Shipping artwork bundles together packaging, freight, insurance, and handling into one estimate, and this calculator prices each piece separately based on your chosen packing method. It first pads your artwork's dimensions to account for the packaging itself — a cardboard box adds 4 inches, a foam-lined softpack adds 6, and a custom wooden crate adds 8 — then computes dimensional weight (package length times width times height, divided by 139, the standard domestic carrier divisor) alongside a rough actual-weight estimate that scales with dimensional weight but differs by packing type, since a wooden crate's plywood and foam weigh far more than a cardboard box's bubble wrap. Carriers bill on whichever weight is higher, so the calculator takes that maximum as the billable weight feeding into the shipping-cost formula: a base rate plus 50 cents per billable pound, multiplied by a distance factor that steps up at 500 and 1,500 miles to reflect long-haul freight pricing.

Crating and packing costs use separate per-crate-type formulas that scale with the padded package's linear dimensions and face area. Insurance is set at 2% of your declared artwork value with a $15 floor, and a handling fee jumps from $25 to $75 if the padded package exceeds 48 inches on a side or 130 inches in combined girth, the rough oversized threshold most carriers apply liftgate and special-handling surcharges against. These are planning-level estimates built from typical carrier pricing patterns, not live rate-shopping — always get an actual quote from your fine-art shipper before committing to a number for insurance or a client.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Artwork Width, Artwork Height, and Artwork Depth.
  2. Set Declared Value, Shipping Distance, and Packing (0=Box, 1=Softpack, 2=Crate).
  3. Review the Total Shipping Cost ($) result.
  4. Use Crating/Packing Cost ($) and Carrier Shipping Cost ($) to inform your decision.

How the result changes with Shipping Distance

250$195.45
375$195.45
750$222.37
1,250$222.37

What each input means

Artwork Width
Width of the artwork including frame.
Artwork Height
Height of the artwork including frame.
Artwork Depth
Depth of the artwork including frame profile.
Declared Value
Declared value of the artwork for insurance.
Shipping Distance

Crating/Packing Cost
Cost of packing materials and crate construction.
Carrier Shipping Cost
Freight or parcel carrier charges.
Insurance Cost
Transit insurance based on declared value.
Handling Fee
Pickup/delivery handling fee (higher for oversized).
Billable Weight
Greater of actual or dimensional weight.
Dimensional Weight
Dimensional weight based on package size.
Oversized?
1 if package exceeds standard carrier limits.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Artwork Width = 24, Artwork Height = 30, Artwork Depth = 4, Declared Value = 3000 = 6 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Total Shipping Cost
Total Shipping Cost = cratingCost + shippingCost + insuranceCost + handlingFee
    222.37 = $222.37
  3. Calculate Crating/Packing Cost
    56.6 = $56.6
  4. Calculate Carrier Shipping Cost
    Carrier Shipping Cost = (15 + billableWeight * 0.5) * distanceFactor
    80.77 = $80.77

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does choosing a wooden crate raise the cost so much more than just the padding difference?

Switching to a crate adds more than just extra padding inches (8 vs. 6 for softpack) — it also switches you to a much heavier actual-weight formula (dimensional weight times 0.7 plus 15 lbs, versus 0.4 plus 5 for softpack) and a materially higher crating-cost formula reflecting plywood and hardware. Since billable weight is whichever of dimensional or actual weight is higher, the crate's heavier actual-weight estimate often becomes the number the shipping-cost formula bills against.

What is dimensional weight, and why does it sometimes matter more than actual weight?

Dimensional weight is your padded package's length times width times height divided by 139, the standard domestic-carrier divisor that approximates how much space a shipment takes up on a truck. Carriers bill whichever is higher between that and actual weight, so a large but lightweight piece — say, a big canvas in a bulky but feather-light softpack — can end up billed on its size rather than its true weight.

Why did my Handling Fee jump from $25 to $75?

The calculator flags a shipment as oversized, tripling the handling fee, if the padded package exceeds 48 inches on any single side or its combined length-plus-width-plus-depth girth exceeds 130 inches. Since the fee is based on the padded dimensions (your artwork size plus the packing allowance for your chosen crate type), a piece just under those thresholds unpacked can cross them once packing is added, especially with a wooden crate's larger 8-inch pad.

How does the Distance input affect Carrier Shipping Cost?

Shipping cost is a base rate plus 50 cents per billable pound, then multiplied by a distance factor that steps up at two thresholds: 1x under 500 miles, 1.5x from 500 up to 1,500 miles, and 2.5x beyond 1,500 miles. That means crossing just past the 500- or 1,500-mile mark can jump your shipping cost noticeably more than the same distance increase within a single tier.
