This calculator builds five training zones with the Karvonen method, which works off heart rate reserve rather than raw percentages of maximum. Max Heart Rate is the simple 220-minus-age estimate — it depends only on your age and drops exactly one beat per year. Heart Rate Reserve subtracts your resting pulse from that maximum, and each zone is then a fixed percentage of the reserve added back on top of resting: Zone 1 recovery spans 50-60 percent, Zone 2 aerobic base 60-70, tempo 70-80, threshold 80-90, and VO2 max 90-100. The practical consequence is that the two inputs pull the zone boundaries in opposite directions on different schedules — each year of age trims one beat from the ceiling of every zone, while each beat added to your resting heart rate raises the floor of every zone and compresses the whole reserve. Per beat and per year the two inputs are equally strong, but resting heart rate typically varies far more between people than a few years of age, so it is usually the field that personalizes the result. The 220-minus-age maximum is a population average with wide individual spread, and the fixed zone percentages are conventions rather than measured lactate thresholds — lab or field testing beats any formula.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from zones based on plain max heart rate?
Karvonen zones are percentages of your heart rate reserve — max minus resting — added back onto your resting rate. That means two people of the same age but different resting heart rates get different zone boundaries, while a plain percent-of-max system would give them identical ranges.
Why do all my zone boundaries drop as I get older?
Max Heart Rate is estimated as 220 minus age, so every year trims one beat per minute off the maximum and shrinks the reserve that every zone is a percentage of. The five zone percentages (50 through 100) never change — only the ceiling they scale from.
My resting heart rate went down after training — why did my zones move?
Each zone boundary is a blend of max heart rate and resting heart rate (reserve × zone percent, added back onto resting), so a lower resting heart rate pulls every boundary down, not up — both the bottom and the top of each zone drop. The bottom drops by more than the top, so the band widens slightly even as the whole zone shifts lower, and Zone 5's ceiling (a 100 percent reserve boundary, which reduces to your max heart rate) doesn't move at all since it's independent of resting heart rate. Fitter users get wider zones with a lower ceiling, not a higher one.
What intensity does each zone correspond to?
Zone 1 (50-60 percent of reserve) is recovery pace, Zone 2 (60-70) is the aerobic base-building range, Zone 3 (70-80) is tempo work, Zone 4 (80-90) is lactate threshold training, and Zone 5 (90-100) is VO2 max effort reserved for short intervals.
