This calculator runs four classic ideal-body-weight formulas — Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi — and averages them, alongside a healthy-range band derived from BMI. All four share the same structure: a sex-specific base weight at five feet tall, plus a fixed number of kilograms for every inch above sixty inches (heights below five feet are clamped to the base, so the formulas never subtract). They differ in slope: Hamwi adds the most per inch for men (2.7 kg) and Devine the most for women (2.3 kg), while Miller climbs the gentlest for both — so the four estimates fan out as height increases and nearly converge near five feet. Height is the input that matters within a sex: each added inch moves every formula by its slope, while switching sex shifts the whole bundle down by a roughly constant offset. The BMI range works differently — it is height squared times 18.5 and 24.9 — so it widens faster than the formula estimates as you get taller, which is why tall users see the average ideal sitting low inside the band. Results are reported in pounds. These formulas date to drug-dosing research, not body composition: they account for no muscle mass, frame size, or age.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do the four formulas give different weights?

Each assigns a different per-inch slope above five feet: Hamwi adds 2.7 kg per inch for men while Miller adds 1.41 kg. They share the five-foot anchor concept, so estimates nearly coincide at 60 inches and fan out by 10 kg or more at tall heights.

What height does the calculator treat as the anchor?

Sixty inches — five feet. Every formula pays a base weight at that height and adds a fixed amount per inch above it. If you enter a height below 60 inches, the extra-inches term is clamped to zero and you simply get the base weight for your sex.

Why is the BMI range so much wider than the four formula estimates?

The BMI band multiplies height squared by 18.5 and 24.9, so its width grows quadratically with height while the formulas grow linearly. At 70 inches the band spans roughly 129 to 174 pounds — deliberately a range of healthy weights rather than a single target.

Does the calculator account for muscle or frame size?

No. All four formulas were developed from height and sex alone for medication dosing, and the BMI band uses only height. A muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same height receive identical outputs.
