Yoga Teacher Training Hours Calculator

Track your RYT certification progress with contact hours, self-study, and teaching hour requirements.

About this calculator

This calculator checks your logged hours against the Yoga Alliance requirement table for four certification tiers -- RYT 200 and RYT 500 need only Contact Hours and Self-Study Hours, while E-RYT 200 and E-RYT 500 add a Teaching Hours requirement of 1,000 and 2,000 hours respectively. Certification Level has by far the largest effect on Overall Progress of any input, because switching tiers changes the denominator every percentage is measured against -- 180 Contact Hours clears RYT 200 outright but represents well under half of the 450 required for RYT 500 -- while Completed Contact Hours and Completed Self-Study Hours each move Overall Progress by a much smaller, roughly equal amount at the default numbers, since it's simply an average of the three category percentages.

Teaching Hours (E- RYT) only counts toward Overall Progress once Certification Level is set to E-RYT 200 or E-RYT 500; for the two standard RYT tiers, its category is automatically treated as 100% complete regardless of what you enter, since no teaching hours are required at those levels. Weeks Until Deadline has zero effect on Overall Progress -- it only feeds Hours per Week Needed, which spreads your Total Hours Remaining across however many weeks you have left.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Certification Level = 1, Completed Contact Hours = 80, Completed Self-Study Hours = 10, Teaching Hours (E-RYT) = 0 = 5 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Overall Progress
    Overall Progress
    65 = 65
  3. Calculate Certification
    Certification = req.name
    RYT 200 = RYT 200
  4. Calculate Contact Hours Progress
    Contact Hours Progress
    44 = 44

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Hours per Week Needed calculated?

It divides Total Hours Remaining -- the sum of whatever Contact, Self-Study, and (where applicable) Teaching Hours you still need -- by Weeks Until Deadline. A shorter deadline or a larger remaining-hours total both push this figure higher, since the same workload has less time to be spread across.

Does entering Teaching Hours matter if I'm only pursuing RYT 200 or RYT 500?

No. Those two tiers have no teaching-hours requirement, so the calculator automatically treats that category as 100% complete regardless of what you enter in Teaching Hours (E-RYT). It only starts counting toward Overall Progress once Certification Level is set to E-RYT 200 or E-RYT 500.

Why does changing Certification Level move Overall Progress so much more than logging more hours?

Each certification tier requires a different number of hours -- RYT 500 needs 450 Contact Hours versus RYT 200's 180, for example -- so switching tiers changes the denominator every percentage is measured against. That reshuffles Overall Progress far more than adding a modest number of additional Contact or Self-Study Hours at a fixed tier.

Why doesn't Weeks Until Deadline change my Overall Progress percentage?

Overall Progress is purely an average of your Contact, Self-Study, and Teaching hour percentages against the requirement for your chosen Certification Level -- it has nothing to do with timing. Weeks Until Deadline is used separately to calculate Hours per Week Needed, spreading your remaining hours across the time you have left.
