About this calculator

This calculator takes a single total-minutes budget and splits it four ways using percentages you control for three of the categories, with the fourth — meditation — automatically absorbing whatever percentage is left over (the code runs that remainder through Math.max(0, ...), so meditation simply disappears instead of showing a negative number if your other three percentages already add up to more than 100). Each category's minutes are simply your total daily minutes times its percentage share; there's no hidden weighting or adjustment beyond that direct proportion. Weekly and monthly totals are plain multiplication too: your daily minutes times 7 for the week, times 30 divided by 60 for a rough monthly hour figure — a 30-day approximation rather than a true calendar-month calculation, so it will run slightly short in 31-day months and slightly long in February. The estimated pages read per session is the least precise output here: it assumes roughly one page of reading per minute, a rule-of-thumb figure loosely built around a ~250 words-per-minute reading pace against a page holding around 250 words, which will vary a lot depending on your Bible's typeface, translation, and whether you're reading straight through or pausing to reflect.

The real value of this tool isn't precision math — it's forcing an explicit tradeoff. If you set prayer, reading, and journaling percentages that already add to 100%, meditation time disappears entirely, which is a legitimate choice for some devotional styles but worth noticing rather than defaulting into by accident. Adjust the sliders and watch how a few extra minutes in one category quietly steals from the time available in the others.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Total daily minutes = 30, Prayer allocation % = 30, Scripture reading % = 40, Journaling % = 20 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Prayer
    Prayer = totalMinutes * (prayerPct / 100)
    9 = 9
  3. Calculate Reading
    Reading = totalMinutes * (readingPct / 100)
    12 = 12
  4. Calculate Journaling
    Journaling = totalMinutes * (journalPct / 100)
    6 = 6
  5. Calculate Meditation
    Meditation = totalMinutes * (meditationPct / 100)
    3 = 3

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to Meditation time if my other three percentages add up to more than 100%?

Meditation minutes drop to zero. The calculator computes meditation's share as 100 minus your prayer, reading, and journaling percentages, then runs that through Math.max(0, ...) so it can't go negative — it just floors out at zero instead of showing a negative time you'd have to interpret.

How is Estimated Pages Read per Day calculated, and how accurate is it?

It assumes roughly one page of reading per minute, based on a rough 250-words-per-minute reading pace against a Bible page holding around 250 words. It's a loose rule of thumb — actual pages per minute will vary a lot with your Bible's typeface, translation, and whether you're reading straight through or stopping to reflect.

Why isn't Monthly Total (hours) exactly one calendar month's worth of time?

The calculator uses a flat 30-day month — your daily minutes times 30, divided by 60 — rather than your actual calendar month length, so it will run slightly short in 31-day months and slightly long in February. It's meant as a rough planning figure, not a precise monthly total.

Do the percentage sliders adjust each other automatically?

No — you set Prayer, Reading, and Journaling percentages independently, and only Meditation is calculated automatically as the leftover share. If you want meditation time in your plan, you need to keep your three percentages below 100 yourself; the calculator won't rebalance the others for you.
