Scripture Memorization Pace Calculator

Set a verse memorization goal and timeframe. Calculates verses per week, study time needed, and review session load using spaced-repetition principles.

About this calculator

This calculator starts with the simplest possible math — total verses divided by weeks available gives your new-verses-per-week pace — then layers on two time estimates most memorization plans skip. Learning time assumes about 17 minutes to get a fresh verse solid, so weekly new-verse time is just that pace times 17. Review time is trickier, since a spaced-repetition plan means you're never reviewing all your verses at once: this tool approximates your review backlog as roughly half your total target (the midpoint of a growing pile that starts at zero and ends at the full count), then multiplies by 3 minutes per verse and scales by how many days a week you've set aside for review. Add learning and review together, divide by your session length, and you get sessions per week, rounded up so a session is never split.

The total review session count assumes each verse gets reviewed about 8 times over the life of the plan, a middle-of-the-road figure for spaced repetition (real systems like the Leitner method or SM-2 vary this based on how well you recall each verse). The biggest assumption to know going in: the review-time estimate is a midpoint average, not a curve — early weeks in your plan will feel lighter than this number suggests, and later weeks heavier, since backlog only grows as you add verses. If your review days per week is 0, the tool correctly shows zero review time, but that also means newly learned verses get no reinforcement, which most memory research says will hurt retention regardless of how fast you're adding new material.

What each input means

Total verses to memorize
Total number of verses you want to memorize (e.g., 52 for one per week).
Weeks to complete
Number of weeks you have to reach your goal.
Review days per week
Days per week dedicated to reviewing previously memorized verses.
Minutes per study session
Length of each memorization or review session.

What each result means

New verses per week
Number of new verses to learn each week to hit your goal.
Weekly learning time (min)
Minutes per week spent learning new verses (~17 min each).
Weekly review time (min)
Average minutes per week reviewing previously memorized verses.
Total weekly time (min)
Combined learning + review time at the plan midpoint.
Sessions per week
Study sessions needed per week at your chosen session length.
Total days in plan
Calendar days from start to goal completion.
Total review sessions
Estimated total review sessions over the entire plan (~8 reviews per verse).

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    4 parameters
    Total verses to memorize = 52, Weeks to complete = 52, Review days per week = 3, Minutes per study session = 15 = 4 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate New verses per week
    New verses per week = targetVerses / weeksAvailable
    1 = 1
  3. Calculate Total weekly time
    Total weekly time = weeklyNewVerseTime + weeklyReviewTime
    50 = 50
  4. Calculate Weekly learning time
    Weekly learning time = versesPerWeek * initialMemMinutes
    17 = 17
  5. Calculate Weekly review time
    Weekly review time = avgBacklogVerses * reviewMinutesPerVerse * (reviewDaysPerWeek / 7)
    33 = 33

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the review-time estimate use half of my total target verses instead of tracking my actual progress?

Because review load grows as you memorize more verses — early in the plan you have almost nothing to review, and by the end you're reviewing nearly your full target every week. Rather than modeling that whole curve, the calculator picks a single representative number, half of your total target verses, as a stand-in for a typical week. That means your early weeks will actually take less time than this estimate suggests, and your later weeks more.

What happens if I set Review Days per Week to 0?

The weekly review time calculation multiplies your backlog estimate by reviewDaysPerWeek / 7, so setting it to 0 makes that whole term zero — the tool correctly shows no review time and no review sessions in your weekly total. It doesn't warn you that skipping review for newly learned verses works against retention, though; it just computes what you asked for.

Why does Sessions per Week round up instead of to the nearest whole number?

sessionsPerWeek runs Math.ceil() on your weekly total minutes divided by your session length, so 4.1 sessions becomes 5. Rounding up keeps enough time budgeted each week — rounding down or to the nearest number could leave you consistently short a few minutes, which would compound over the life of the plan.

Where does the '~8 reviews per verse' figure for Total Review Sessions come from, and can I adjust it?

It's a fixed multiplier baked into the calculator — totalReviewSessions equals your target verse count times 8 — representing a middle-of-the-road spaced-repetition cadence. It isn't adjustable through any input here; real spaced-repetition systems like the Leitner method or SM-2 vary the number of reviews per item based on how well you actually recall it, so treat this as a ballpark planning figure rather than a schedule to follow verse by verse.
