How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Pool length (m), Pool width (m), and Pool depth (m).
- Set Competition level (1-4).
- Review the Playing area (m²) result.
- Use Water volume (liters) and Water volume (gallons) to inform your decision.
How the result changes with Pool length (m)
| Pool length (m) | Playing area (m²) |
|---|---|
| 19 | 380 |
| 27 | 540 |
| 38 | 760 |
| 47 | 940 |
What each input means
- Pool length (m)
- Length of the playing field in meters. FINA standard is 30m (men) or 25m (women).
- Pool width (m)
- Width of the playing field in meters. FINA standard is 20m.
- Pool depth (m)
- Minimum water depth. FINA requires at least 1.8m; 2.0m preferred for international play.
- Competition level (1-4)
- 1 = recreational, 2 = high school, 3 = collegiate/club, 4 = FINA international.
What each result means
- Playing area (m²)
- Total water surface area of the playing field.
- Water volume (liters)
- Total water volume needed to fill the pool to the specified depth.
- Water volume (gallons)
- Water volume converted to US gallons.
- FINA compliance (%)
- Score indicating how well the pool meets FINA international standards (100 = fully compliant).
- Goal-to-goal distance (m)
- Distance between the two goal lines.
- Half-distance line (m)
- Position of the half-distance line from each end.
- Boundary markers needed
- Number of perimeter lane rope/markers needed (spaced every 1.5m).
- Caps needed
- Total water polo caps needed for two teams plus spares.
- Balls needed
- Match and warm-up balls recommended for the competition level.
- Heating energy (kWh/day)
- Estimated daily energy to maintain FINA-compliant water temperature.
How this is calculated
Worked example, using the default values
- Identify Input Parameters4 parametersPool length (m) = 30, Pool width (m) = 20, Pool depth (m) = 2, Competition level (1-4) = 3 = 4 input(s) provided
- Calculate Playing areaPlaying area = poolLengthM * poolWidthM600 = 600
- Calculate Water volumeWater volume = playingAreaM2 * poolDepthM * 10001200000 = 1200000
- Calculate Water volumeWater volume = waterVolumeLiters * 0.264172317006 = 317006
