Pace per 100m -- the standard unit swimmers use to compare effort across any distance -- is derived by scaling your total swim time to a 100-meter equivalent: total seconds divided by distance, multiplied by 100. Speed in km/h follows directly from distance over time. Total laps comes from dividing distance by the selected pool length (25m short course or 50m long course), and time per lap divides total time by that lap count. SWOLF (stroke count + time), a widely used efficiency metric in competitive and fitness swimming, adds the number of strokes taken per pool length to the time in seconds for that length -- a lower SWOLF score means covering the same length with fewer strokes, less time, or both, which is generally read as more efficient technique rather than just being faster. Race predictions for 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m are a simple linear scale-up of your current pace per 100m to the target distance -- unlike land-running formulas that build in an endurance penalty for longer distances, this calculator assumes your pace holds steady, so predictions for distances much longer than what you actually swam should be treated as optimistic estimates rather than firm targets. Estimated calories burned uses a flat ~500 calories/hour moderate-effort swimming rate applied to your total time, independent of how far you actually swam in that time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does swimming farther in the same amount of time burn more calories here?

It doesn't in this calculator -- estimated calories burned is based purely on total elapsed time (roughly 500 calories per hour at a moderate effort), not on distance covered. Two swims of the same duration show the same estimated calorie burn here even if one covered noticeably more distance, since the calculator doesn't factor swim intensity or stroke type beyond that single flat hourly rate.

What does a lower SWOLF score actually mean?

SWOLF combines your stroke count per pool length with your time in seconds for that length, so a lower total means you covered the length using fewer strokes, less time, or some combination of both. Competitive and fitness swimmers track SWOLF over time as an efficiency metric distinct from raw speed -- it's possible to swim a length faster by simply stroking harder and more often, which speed alone won't distinguish from genuinely more efficient technique, but a falling SWOLF score at a similar pace usually does indicate improving efficiency.

How reliable is the 1500m prediction if I only swam 400m?

Treat it as optimistic. This calculator's race predictions scale your current pace per 100m linearly to the target distance, with no adjustment for the fatigue and pacing changes that come with attempting a much longer swim. Real swim performance typically slows somewhat over greater distances, so a genuine 1500m attempt will likely be slower than a straight linear scale-up of a 400m pace suggests -- the prediction is most reliable when the target distance is close to the distance you actually swam.

Does choosing a 50m pool instead of a 25m pool change your calculated pace?

No -- Pace per 100m and Speed are both derived purely from total distance and total time, independent of Pool Length. What Pool Length does change is Total Laps and Time per Lap, since a 50m pool requires half as many laps to cover the same distance as a 25m pool, with each lap correspondingly taking about twice as long.
