Email Marketing ROI Calculator
Calculate revenue per email and overall email marketing ROI.
About this calculator
This calculator walks a subscriber list through the standard email marketing funnel — opens, then clicks from those opens, then purchases from those clicks — to turn engagement rates into a dollar ROI figure. It multiplies list size by open rate to get opens per campaign, multiplies that by click rate to get clicks, and multiplies that by conversion rate to get purchases, then multiplies purchases by average order value to get revenue for a single campaign. That per-campaign revenue is scaled by campaigns sent per month to get monthly revenue, and ROI is calculated as (monthly revenue minus monthly cost) divided by monthly cost, expressed as a percentage — the standard ROI formula applied to a marketing channel rather than a capital investment.
Because each stage of the funnel is a multiplication, a change anywhere upstream compounds through every stage downstream of it: a higher open rate produces more opens, which produces proportionally more clicks, conversions, and revenue, all else equal. The calculator also reports revenue per email sent and cost per conversion, two efficiency metrics marketers use to compare campaigns or channels independent of list size, plus an annualized per-subscriber value useful for justifying list-growth spend. Because monthly cost sits in the denominator of ROI, a small platform or content cost against a large list produces a very different ROI profile than the same cost against a small one, even with identical funnel rates.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your combined monthly email platform and content cost.
- Input the number of emails sent, open rate (%), and click rate (%).
- Set the conversion rate (%) and average revenue per conversion.
- Review the campaign ROI, revenue per email sent, and cost per conversion.
- A/B test subject lines to improve open rate — a 1% open rate gain directly increases ROI.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a higher click-through rate matter more than it looks at first glance?
Click rate isn't applied to the list — it's applied to opens, and conversion rate is then applied to clicks. Because the funnel stages multiply in sequence, a percentage-point gain in click rate carries through to conversions and revenue at full force, while list size or open rate gains further upstream get diluted by every rate below them. Small click-rate improvements on an engaged list often move revenue more than they appear to on paper.
Why can ROI go deeply negative even with a large email list?
ROI compares monthly revenue to monthly cost, and a large list only helps if the funnel actually converts. If open rate, click rate, or conversion rate are low, monthly revenue can stay small no matter how many subscribers are on the list, while the platform and content cost is fixed — producing a negative or even close to −100% ROI when revenue barely covers, or falls well short of, that fixed cost.
What is a realistic email open rate and click rate to plug in?
Rates vary enormously by industry and list quality, but marketing benchmarks commonly cite roughly 15–25% open rates and 2–5% click-through rates (of sends, or higher measured as a share of opens) for permission-based B2C and B2B lists. Use your own platform's historical numbers when you have them — they will be far more accurate than any industry average for your specific list.
How is revenue per email sent different from revenue per conversion?
Revenue per email sent divides total campaign revenue by the entire list size, so it reflects the whole funnel's efficiency including everyone who never opened the email. Average order value, by contrast, only reflects the spending of people who actually converted. Revenue per email is the better metric for comparing whether growing the list or improving funnel rates would be more valuable.
Does adding more campaigns per month always increase total ROI?
It increases monthly revenue proportionally, since each additional campaign adds another full pass through the funnel at the same rates. Whether ROI improves too depends on whether monthly cost rises with campaign frequency — if the platform and content cost stays flat while campaigns increase, ROI improves; if content costs scale with campaign count, the net effect is smaller.
