About this calculator

This calculator takes three measurements -- shoulder, waist, and hip width -- and builds two independent ratios from them: Shoulder to Hip Ratio and Waist to Hip Ratio. Neither ratio uses all three measurements: Shoulder to Hip Ratio responds only to shoulder and hip width and completely ignores waist width, while Waist to Hip Ratio responds only to waist and hip width and completely ignores shoulder width. Body Shape (the text classification like "Hourglass" or "Inverted Triangle") is then determined by a chain of threshold checks against both ratios together, so a shape label can flip even from a small change in just one measurement if it happens to cross one of those thresholds.

Somatotype scoring (endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph percentages) uses a third derived ratio -- Shoulder to Waist -- alongside Waist to Hip Ratio, and assigns points to whichever tendency the measurements suggest most strongly; a tie between the top two scores is reported as a combined type like "Mesomorph-Ectomorph" rather than picking one. This tool applies common fitness-industry body shape and somatotype heuristics; it's a rough visual/proportional classification, not a validated anthropometric or medical measurement.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter Shoulder Width, Waist Width, and Hip Width.
  2. Review the Body Type (Somatotype) result.
  3. Use Body Shape and Shoulder to Hip Ratio to inform your decision.
  4. Use the chart to visualize the results and explore different scenarios by adjusting inputs.

What each input means

Shoulder Width
Measure across the back from shoulder bone to shoulder bone.
Waist Width
Measure at the narrowest point of your waist (usually above navel).
Hip Width
Measure at the widest point of your hips/buttocks.

How this is calculated

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters
    Shoulder Width = 18, Waist Width = 14, Hip Width = 17 = 3 input(s) provided
  2. Calculate Body Type
    Endomorph = Endomorph
  3. Calculate Body Shape
    Inverted Triangle = Inverted Triangle
  4. Calculate Shoulder to Hip Ratio
    Shoulder to Hip Ratio
    1.06 = 1.06

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my waist measurement affect my Shoulder to Hip Ratio?

No -- Shoulder to Hip Ratio is calculated purely from Shoulder Width divided by Hip Width. Waist Width plays no role in that specific ratio; it only feeds Waist to Hip Ratio and the somatotype scoring, which are calculated separately.

Does my shoulder measurement affect my Waist to Hip Ratio?

No -- Waist to Hip Ratio is calculated purely from Waist Width divided by Hip Width. Shoulder Width has no effect on this ratio at all; it only feeds Shoulder to Hip Ratio and the somatotype scoring calculations, which run independently.

Why did my Body Shape result change with only a small measurement change?

Body Shape is assigned by checking your Shoulder to Hip Ratio and Waist to Hip Ratio against a series of fixed threshold values (like 0.85, 0.90, or 1.05). A small measurement change that pushes a ratio across one of those thresholds can flip which shape category you land in, even though your proportions barely changed.

What does a combined result like 'Mesomorph-Ectomorph' mean?

The calculator scores endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph tendencies separately from your ratios, then reports whichever score is highest as your dominant type. When the top two scores are exactly tied, it reports both names combined instead of arbitrarily picking one, since the measurements didn't clearly favor a single somatotype.
