How to Use This Calculator
  1. Enter the player's goals scored and total shots taken from the game box score.
  2. Input assists, steals, and blocks/saves for positive contributions.
  3. Enter turnovers and exclusions committed for negative contributions, and exclusions drawn as a positive.
  4. Read Player Efficiency Rating (0–100) — 60+ is excellent; 80+ is MVP-caliber performance.
  5. Check Shooting Percentage — elite water polo players shoot 40–60%.
  6. Use the Performance Grade (0–5 scale) and Turnover Ratio to identify areas for individual improvement.

What each input means

Goals scored
Number of goals scored by the player in the game.
Shots taken
Total shots on goal (including goals scored).
Assists
Passes that directly led to a teammate scoring.
Steals
Ball stolen from opponent while in play.
Turnovers
Times the player lost possession to the other team.
Exclusions drawn
Kickout fouls drawn against opponents (earning a 6-on-5 power play).
Exclusions committed
Kickout fouls committed (20-second exclusion). Three and you're out for the game.
Blocks / saves
Shots blocked in the field or saves (for goalies).

What each result means

Player efficiency rating
Composite performance score on a 0-100 scale. 60+ is excellent, 80+ is MVP-caliber.
Shooting percentage (%)
Goals scored divided by shots taken. Elite players shoot 40-60%.
Points created
Goals scored plus assists — total direct offensive contributions.
Plus/minus score
Weighted positive actions minus weighted negative actions.
Positive contributions
Weighted sum of goals, assists, steals, exclusions drawn, and blocks.
Negative contributions
Weighted sum of turnovers and exclusions committed.
Turnover ratio (%)
Turnovers as a percentage of total offensive actions. Lower is better.
Performance grade (0-5)
0=poor, 1=below avg, 2=average, 3=good, 4=excellent, 5=MVP.
