About this calculator

Foot length in centimetres is what all four systems are anchored to, and the constant doing the work is 0.847 cm per size step. That figure is the barleycorn — one third of an inch — which English shoemakers adopted as their increment in the fourteenth century and which every anglophone sizing system still inherits. Men's sizing here begins at 22.5 cm for a US 4 and adds a barleycorn per size, so the default US 10 resolves to 27.6 cm of foot. Women's uses the same increment from a lower origin of 21.0 cm at US 4, which is why the Category selector matters far more than it appears: a women's 8 and a men's 8 describe feet a centimetre and a half apart. The regional offsets are the crude part of the model.

UK is US minus a half for men and minus two for women, while EU is US plus 33, plus 31 or plus 16.5 depending on category. Those are linear stand-ins for the Paris point system, which does not track either anglophone scale perfectly, so a half-size disagreement at the extremes is normal. Results are rounded to the nearest half for US and UK, the nearest third for EU, and a tenth of a centimetre for length. Width is entirely absent — no B, D or EE — as is the manufacturer's last, which is the real reason two shoes marked with the same number fit differently. Japanese and Mondopoint sizes are already foot length in centimetres, so reach for the CM option there.

How this is calculated

Formula

Shoe sizes vary by region and gender. Generally: Men's US = UK + 0.5 = EU - 33. Women's US = UK + 2 = EU - 31. CM measures actual foot length.

Worked example, using the default values

  1. Identify Input Parameters

  2. Calculate US Size
    10 = 10
  3. Calculate UK Size

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does one shoe size only change the length by 0.847 cm?

That step is the barleycorn, a third of an inch, and it has been the unit of shoe sizing in the English-speaking world for roughly seven hundred years. A half size moves your foot length by only about four millimetres, which is why half sizes matter so much.

Does it matter whether I choose Men's or Women's?

A great deal. The two scales use the same increment but different starting points, 22.5 cm versus 21.0 cm at a US 4, so the same printed number describes feet about a centimetre and a half apart. Picking the wrong category shifts every result.

How accurate is the EU conversion?

Treat it as approximate. European sizes come from the Paris point system, which does not map onto US or UK scales in a perfectly straight line, while this engine applies a fixed offset. Expect up to half a size of disagreement, more at very small or large sizes.

Can I use the CM figure for Japanese sizes?

Yes, that is exactly what it is for. Japanese sizing and the Mondopoint system used for ski boots and military issue both state foot length in centimetres directly, so the Foot Length row is your answer with no further conversion needed.

What about wide or narrow fittings?

Nothing here addresses width. Letter widths such as B, D and EE, and the shape of a given manufacturer's last, sit outside every one of these numbering systems, which is why the same marked size from two brands can fit very differently.
