How to Use Our Body Fat Percentage Calculator
Body fat percentage is a far more meaningful health metric than weight alone. Our Body Fat Percentage Calculator estimates your body fat using the U.S. Navy method, which requires just a few simple measurements.
Taking Your Measurements
You will need a flexible measuring tape:
- Neck Circumference -- Measure around your neck just below the larynx (Adam's apple), keeping the tape level.
- Waist Circumference -- Measure at the narrowest point of your waist, typically at the navel. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin.
- Hip Circumference (women only) -- Measure at the widest point of your hips and buttocks.
- Height -- Your standing height.
Measure first thing in the morning for the most consistent results. Take each measurement twice and use the average.
Understanding Your Results
General body fat percentage ranges:
Men:
- Essential fat: 2-5%
- Athletes: 6-13%
- Fitness: 14-17%
- Average: 18-24%
- Above average: 25%+
Women:
- Essential fat: 10-13%
- Athletes: 14-20%
- Fitness: 21-24%
- Average: 25-31%
- Above average: 32%+
Accuracy Notes
The Navy method is an estimate accurate to within roughly 3-4% for most people. For more precise measurements, consider DEXA scans, hydrostatic weighing, or professional caliper testing. However, the Navy method is excellent for tracking trends over time -- even if the absolute number is slightly off, the direction of change is reliable.
